That's because we've all been impersonated at one time or another but the difference is we didn't go and start a thread pissing and moaning about it. Man up!

Irrelevant... 1.) I was just using the whole impersonation thing as an example. 2.) If you want to get specific on this topic, he wasnt really "pissing and moaning" he was just saying that someone impersonated him which led to people he knows asking him about it. Im sure if someone tarnished your name, regardless of how small of a tarnish, you would want the same to happen... so in a sense he MANNED UP... as you said... to try to get people to stop... 3.) My main point, I still dont see a need to snap on him. People tend to act as if the poster thinks its a life or death situation, he was just commenting on the fact that someone did it...
I don't see the need to register names, and I honestly think it would take away from a lot of the humor on the boards. If someone is impersonating you, why don't YOU just register your handle? I realize it's a little inconvenient, but I think it's a much better alternative to making everyone register.
As for the board being a bunch of 16 year olds, this is untrue. There are a lot of guys (not so many gals) in their 20s, 30s, 40s, etc on here. There're plenty of threads to prove that. However, many of the older fellas are just as capable of acting what some might call immature as younger guys. In fact, they're usually better at it!
Who wants to visit a board that is ALL about running and nothing else? Most of the best threads on here have nothing to do with running. I know I've gotten lots of advice on girls, love, finance, education, and life in general. To me that's more important than discussing whether Rupp will run sub 4:00 saturday.
It's not hard to register a name. Just do it and stop complaining, it's what people do to avoid these situations, I registered mine as soon as I knew it was an option.
I don't like registration for this board because it would take a lot of the humor off the board. I prefer a less moderated board. Spam, overtly offensive stuff and complete crap (which is rare, I'm talking people posting some silly comments over and over which happens from time to time) should be deleted, but that's about it. I hate overly moderated boards. Most moderators tend to become dicks and delete things that shouldn't be. I got kicked off a registered message board a couple weeks ago because I dared to call into question some apparently sacrosanct ideas that moderators on there had, it was asinine. I hope letsrun stays as is.
Anyone that wants to read good info can, it just requires an ounce of effort.

This guy just had a legitimate comment about someone impersonating him and certain people just snapped back like a kid torching their parents
Wow, I'd like to avoid those who torch their parents as well! Sound like a bunch of psychos!
Seems to me the only problem you have is that your workmates or friends know your "handle".
You have no idea who I am and nor does anyone else on letsrun and I have been posting for about 5 years.
The problem is with you.
Shut your mouth when you log off---no problem.

Aren't you like 24 or something? Old schooler?
Doh!
Alan you seem like a crybaby. Are you even fast? I mean can you offer any of us runners any real advice? If not dont take things so seriously. I dont know whos who on letsrun so for all I know your a 2:10 marathoner but im guessing not.
News flash- savvy internet users can impersonate registered users, too. I myself have an impersonator who regularly posts whimsical stoned asides under my name.
I've got to know--was that you making the asinine post about the best place in Chicago to live for a twenty-something was in the suburbs (although you've never lived there)?
Did you also make the equally illogical post concerning flight attendants making more money than most professions because they have one of the most dangerous jobs?
If so, I'd say the imposter is a slight improvement.
I agree with Alan and I've advocated it for years. This is not simply an issue of registering a name. The fact remains that the signal to noise ratio on this board has been sinking year by year. For those of you who have been around for awhile, consider the sorts of threads you see now compared to those you saw 6 or 7 years ago.
I will grant that the ability to create a one-time humorous name for ironic or satirical effect can be amusing, but most of what we see is just crap: smart alec remarks and sock puppets. I don't come to letsrun nearly as often as I used to simply because the level of conversation has degraded so much. A quick look at the news home page and that's it for me. This has become dyestat with lower quality software.
Registration is not a panacea for all manner of ills, but I think it would help. Of course, this has been brought up time and again, and nothing has ever happened. I doubt it ever will. Things will just get uglier.

Ummmm, that's actually you after a bit of the bud...
Doh!

I've been reading this site since 2000 or 2001, and posting since 2002. My recollection (and I will admit to having the worst memory of anyone I know, but when I think I remember something, I usually do) is that there was just as much drivel back then as now. I could be wrong, though.

Letsrun offers runners/the public a chance to ask for advice about running, life etc. Some people actually come to the forum to look for real answers to questions they may be having. I do think that most non-"troll" threads create good discussion and can be helpful. But unless you can now verify a Doctorate Degree or Olympic medal by a user name I would not take everything so serious. Letsrun provides information and laughs at the same time. One day you may sitting at your quiet office bored out of your mind and need a little entertainment...the answer Letsrun. That same day your out for a run and for some reason you are having pain behind your knee. Thinking to yourself there have to be other runners that have experienced this, I wonder what they did to fix it?...your answer Letsrun.
You can be both a Troll and an informant here, thats what makes it interesting. So just relax and if someone uses your name that you didnt register, create a new one. No one knew exactly who you were anyway. If you dont like the troll posts or comments go read a book or go to a coach, you will get the answers you are looking for, all joking aside.

That would be hard for JimFiore. I think we know who he is.
have both -
some threads should require registration
like the Ryan Shay thread - most people post thoughtful, nice comments then you get the random person who posts the most classless garbage that makes you want to ring their necks
..and she said "just think about it" and I did and it made no sense to me.. but then later on I had a dream that what she meant was "don't think about it" and when I thought about THAT it made perfect sense, but I went ahead and smoked it anyway..

I'm sorry, but that's ridiculous.
I have been a BIG advocate of registration for years. What some people would mistakenly brand "humor" is often simply spam, and there are numerous posts that are extremely inappropriate that would be eliminated. You would still have the funnier members of our population, too. Implementing mandatory registration wouldn't eliminate the silly ramblings of "the430miler" and his ilk.
PLEASE Wejo, let's make this happen!
Agreed- things have gotton much more unpleasant and annoying here. The name calling, obscenities, and just general rudeness are getting old. Combine that with the random thread deletions, where because of some stupid comment a bunch of responses, some thoughtful and interesting, get deleted as well, and letsrun has definetely taken a turn for the worse. I used to look daily, now its once every week or so, which in a way I should probably be happy.
True registration would be nice because even though you are still hiding out behind a computer SOMEONE might know who you are. Plus if you want to be taken seriously you won't post useless crap under yur registered name. I also think it would cut down on some of the unnecessaty deletion of posts because they could warn specific people about their actions. For now its just a free-for-all unless someone high up doesn't like your position then POOF no-mo post. Many people have internet bravado that they would never express in real life. MOST of the posts are good info and you can just ignore the assenine posts. But when you post a real opinion or facts as you know them and they get deleted it's really annoying.
