New fad? It was a fad among British runners thirty-five years ago.
No it wasn't.
Did Rod Dixon wear black socks?
I have always been afraid to wear black socks because of my high school health teacher (who was, of course, the football coach)... He told us this story about a football player who wore black socks in a game and developed a bad blister. In the middle of the game, the blister popped, and the ink from the sock caused the blister to become infected. The infection eventually spread to other parts of his body, and he died.
Who knows if that story is true or not... but it scared the sh*t out of me enough so that I always wear white socks.
Simply put, I wear black running socks for the simple fact that they don't get dingy after about 5 runs like white ones do...Same reason I don't wear white running shirts...When you have a crushed limestone trail in your backyard like we do up here in Akron, that stuff'll stain your white clothes after one run and you can never get it out....
I haven't wore white socks in a race in a long time. Occasionally I will wear something with a design but I almost always wear black cool max socks, they look so much better. I have been wearing black socks for...about 10 years now.

Not that I'm aware of. Dixon is antipodean, btw.
There were a handful of Brits who wore red socks, following the trend set by Dave Bedford.
I bought a few pairs of black 2090s since they were on deep discount on Eastbay. Did not want to wear white socks with them, or go sockless. Thus, bought black socks to wear with them.
Black on black is good. Otherwise, they look dorky unless there is alot of black on the shoe.
this is one of the best threads i've seen in a while on lets run keep er going!

I was told the same thing in PE. And in XC.

In the United Kingdom and Ireland, "the Antipodes" is often used to refer to Australia and New Zealand[2] (and "Antipodeans" for their inhabitants), despite the fact that neither Australia nor New Zealand actually overlap the antipodal points of the British Isles. However, New Zealand (or more precisely the North Island and the northern tip of the South island) is antipodal to Spain and Northern Portugal, as shown on the map.
Hey, malmo-I did know he was from NZ. Does that count?
Always learning,

All of you black sock wearing folk owe it all to Chris Webber and the Michigan basketball team. They started the black athletic sock trend in America.
I was going to say the same thing. That team is as responsible for the black socks trend as Jordan is for the baggy shorts thing. By 1992, everyone on the track team had black hightops and socks for our late night hoops games.
As for running, my college XC team was already using a marker or spraypaint to blacken all their racing spikes when I got to the team in 1990. I liked the look and joined in. I've mostly worn black socks for everything since then.
I started wearing black socks because they were banned by my high school coach and I wanted to be a bad ass. Since then I only wear black socks, running and not running. I just think they contrast well with the majority of shoe colors.

A few years ago I get a phone call from a british sounding guy. He says. "malmo! where are you?" I said, "I'm in New York." He says, "Why aren't you in Falmouth?" I said, "Who is this?" He says, "One of your friends. We're at the Quarterdeck, when are you getting here?" I said, "Who the hell is this?" He says, "We've got a beer for you." I said, "Are you antipoidean?" He says, "hell yes, I'm antipodean." I said, "Then you must be Rod Freakin Dixon?"
The next day I headed up to Falmouth.

rippy cripple,
As you and I are about the same age and live in the same area of the country, I beg of you, please don't run while wearing black socks, and please don't wear black socks with shorts. I wouldn't want anyone to think you are me. Do you also have huge biceps like I do?
I used to have some serious 14 inch guns but stopped lifting a few years ago. While I haven't been able to run in the last 3 years, my workout shoes are mostly black so the socks don't look out of place. Just got me a pair of all white basketball shoes which I will never be seen wearing black socks with.
I thought that you might come here and point out that Bedford wore red socks. I don't know if he ever wore black socks in his races, but I know that a lot of people thought he did (perhaps because of the black-and-white photography), and some runners wore black socks because of that.
Exactly. I've worn black socks for about 15 years, approximately the amount of time I though Bedford wore black socks.
I started wearing black socks in races back in 1978, because of Dave Bedford. This is ancient news. Heck, Rono wore blue plaid socks in the NCAA x-c meet.
give it a rest. everyone knows it was the donk who brought the black socks back. however, i have see photos of yifter the shifter sporting black argyle socks in the late 70s
