So what? The top 25 NCAA guys probably can't finish in the top 10 of a 100 mile trail run at altitude. See assumed Asafa Powell quote above.
I'd say almost all couldn't even finish a 100 mile run. Its a different animal altogether. A long marathon training run is between 22 to 26 miles. Most of the top ultra runners put down long runs of 35-40 miles. The conditioning factor is completely different. A 14:00 5k, 30:00 10k, 2:10 marathon, ect is never going to equate to a good ultra marathoner. How many excellent marathoners drop out of races because of injury fatigue ect. Ultras are almost an entirely different sport altogether, until you run one you'll never carry a large amount of respect. I mean most people just see 50, 100 miles as another number.
Next time you do you 22 mile marathon training run, get some water and see if you can go out for another 13 miles. Afterwards, if you do, just think; 15 more miles and you're halfway there.
