Maybe Brian Sell is a grown up who does what he does because he wants to. Maybe if Brian thought he weren't getting his money's worth out of Hansons he is smart enough to leave. Maybe if he IS staying with them, it's because he thinks it's working for him.
Most of all, maybe publicly speculating on his motives is completely pointless.

Who is to say that Sell isn't already doing as well as he can financially? Who's to say that he isn't earning north of $150,000 a year already, not including his Home Depot income? Who's to say that he could do better elsewhere? Who's to say that he could run faster by going to altitude and abandoning his support system?
Bill Rodgers ran 2:09 working full time as a teacher. To each his own.
Sell's only working 4 hours a day. That's not hard. I'd find it much harder just sitting on my bum all day waiting for the second training session....of course I could always post on LetsRun all day!..:)

Not true. Rodgers was (semi) famous for saying that nobody who worked 40 hours per week could ever beat him.
I could be wrong, and maybe the man himself will set us straight, but I believe that by April 1975 (when he ran 2:09:55 for his first Boston win) he was already a full-time runner. I remeber weeing his training schedule leading up to that race and the World XC Champs from '75 and he was running 140-155 mpw most of the time. He even had one 200 mile week. My guess is that he was working part-time or not at all when he ran 2:09 and after that.
How can you guys not like Sell? He gives hope to so many.
He ran down some of the faster marathoners in history, and prove that at this point in time he is the third best runner at that distance that America has to offer.
Don't forget altitude does not work for everyone anyway. Ritz had to leave altitude because he was getting injured too much and sea level seems to be working for him.
I'm pretty sure Keith and Kevin Hanson pay Sell $100k/year due to his sub-2:11 PR.
there is a reason for cramping up or getting hurt or having a bad day. Sell 100% deserves to be on this team and you are so wrong to try and take that awaay from him.

he made a good amount more in 2006 than people would imagine....
brian makes 2.3 million dollars a year at least.
Brian Sell is far from poor everyone.
Do you know Mahon or Larsen? Who does Mahon consult all the time about his athletes? Vigil. Who is Larsen's best buddy and partner in crime? Vigil. Vigil and Larsen are at the center of this resurgence in US distance running. Vigil's not going to be in to the day-to-day work anymore, but if you looked at Mahon's phone bill, Vigil's number would pop up A LOT.

And Kevin and Keith don't charge him to be agents or coaches either.
They also consult Dr. Martin and several others but that does not make them coaches either. Vigil was never Meb's coach. Meb goes out of his way to point out this fact. Vigil is an excellent cross-country coach that is in the dark when it comes to the marathon. Deena Kastor was the rare exception.
The best quote I ever heard came from Rod Dehaven in the 2000 marathon trials. He said that he was never worried about Peter Delacerda being out in front and knowing that he had to win to earn a spot on the Olympic team. Rod said that Delacerda was guaranteed to come back because he was an Adams State guy that was being coached by Joe Vigil. Rod was right of course.

And let's face it, he didn't make the US team because he set international marathoning on fire; Hall is the guy who did that. That is what loyalty can get you if it's a one way street.
Sell might not want to leave his family, move to Mammoth Lakes and live at altitude like the people in the US faster than him (when healthy) have done. He might not want to do the workouts that Vigil/Mahon use, so the comment Bob Kennedy made about American runners not wanting to leave their comfort zone may apply here.
But my impression is that Hansons have gotten much more out of Sell than the other way around.
If I'm not mistaken, Brian Sell was a pretty darned good college runner, but not a great one. This "broken" program he's now a part of has resulted in a 2:11 marathon, far beyond what anybody would have predicted for him coming out of college. Realistically compare Meb's (NCAA Champ) and Abdi's (2nd to Goucher who was on fire that year), and Khalid (former world record holder for god's sake)to Sell's college experience, and I think it's pretty darned amazing the guy has been able to get to the point where he's beating those guys (even if they are hobbled). Wouldn't 2:11 have won the U.S. trials by like three minutes in 2000?
First off I don't wanna hear what if this guy did this and this guy didnt cramp up. Whatever, fact is Sell beat them on that day. He ran within himself and didn't try to run over his head early in the race.
But if you wanna say what if. What if all those guys didnt drop out or weren't hurt. Who's to say they couldn't run with Hall. What if Meb and Abdi and KK were top 3. Personally if KK caught that group of 5 when he was running alone I think he would have put the fear of God in them, and judging by Hall's comments he was a bit concerned when he made his move.
But, thats what is great about sports, you can debate the whatifs (I know I've done it in other sports when my team losses), but it won't change anything and i think discussing what might of happened is an insult to 3 guys that ran great races and made the team.
Brian Sell is probably my favorite runner. But he portrays himself (the media does at least) as a low income guy who "refueals on fast food burgers" because he cant afford anything else, and i thought his reasoning for going to dental school if the trials didnt work out was because he couldnt support his family while running?
It seems plausible that all the usccess hes having is causing him to rake in the $$s, but why did he want to go to dental school then?
Whatever the case, Brian is the man, no doubt.
