My Son Ryan Shay

I know this sounds like something cheesy out of a rap video, but I've poured out liquor for the deaths of several friends and family over the years and, for some reason, it's been one helpful way of coping.

I have to ask: what was Ryan's drink?

I never met or knew Ryan other than through media like this but I cried for him & his family on my run today.

My deepest condolences to the Shay family and to Alicia, we had the honor of twice calling him a National Champion here in KC MO. You have the greatest honor of calling him son, brother, husband, and so on. I wish you all comfort and peace in your grieving time.

Your son will be greatly missed, even by those of us who didn't know him personally, because he was such an inspiration to the running community. Best wishes to you and your family.

To me Ryan was a huge inspiration in my running. He was a true gentleman and an extremely fierce competitor.

Words can't say it enough, but my deepest sympathies, thoughts, and prayers to the Shay family. Best wishes through this tragic time as we mourn a highly respected athlete and great person.

As a runner who recently turned 18 and dreams big, I'd like to say that Ryan was a real inspiration to me.

I did not know Ryan Shay but I know very well the kind of people who spend years working hard in pursuit of the dream of the Olympics or Olympic Trials.

I was stunned to read the tragic news today and it is something that has affected me deeply. We should all be thankful that there are people like Ryan in the sport who show us the way it should be done. This is a big loss for the running community and I am heartbroken for the Shay family and his wife Alicia.

I wish that there was something I could do but all I can do is hope that Ryan is in a better place. The Shay's should be very proud of Ryan and all that he accomplished in life.
