Does Anybody Know What is the Fastest 1500m in a Decathlon?

You'd think McMullen could do a decent 1500 given what big brother can turn for the mile. Matterofact big Paul could probably have done a darn good decathlon himself.

i know he's competed in the decathlon at least a couple of times (as high as U.S. champs, maybe?) anyone know what his point totals, and 1500 times, were? i think that would be a pretty good indicator of what a good middle distance runner could do if he were focused on the decathlon.

Only accounts for 7000 point or more scores so a lesser score may have a shorter time.

The finish of the decathlon was memorable, and historic, for the way Wisconsin's gutty Joe Detmer ran the 1,500 meters and moved from third to second. He ran the No. 2 time in American decathlon history with his 4:04.11. The only faster time by an American is also the world record of 3:58.7 by Robert Baker.

curtis beach, upcoming senior in high school from new mexico and one of the most talented hs decathletes in the us right now ran 4:14.08 at the great southwest classic to win with 7185 points. he also finished 4th at this year's youth world championships in the octathlon, moving up from 6th place after the 1000m, which he ran in 2:35.57 with the second place guy in his heat, and in the entire field, almost 8 full seconds behind him.

I also saw Bakers score as 7583 because of changed point scales in ?85?

That event was the NCAA DivI outdoor champs anyone have a link to the complete results of the Decathlon?

Whoever wrote that article didn't look too closely! It looks like Detmer has the No. 3 time in American history, NOT the No. 2! These times BOTH look faster to me:

The 1500m is the pink elephant in the decathlon. You can get big and strong enough to throw, jump, and sprint. Those events all use similar bioenergetics. The 1500m is a completely different animal. Think back to high school. A lot of the jumpers and sometimes the throwers (moreso with the discus) ran sprints. I've never seen a 1600m or 800m runner in high school do well in the sprints or throws.

I have seen very good pole vaulters who were also good in mid-d & even XC. We also had a guy on my high school team who threw 199' in the Jav & was on our 4x4 & 4x8 & rarely even did running workouts. He was also the QB on the football team. Believe it or not, there are some freaks of nature out there that can just about do it all.

Hey... Are you guys talkin' about me? I'm number 4 on the list... Believe it or not! I surf this site occasionally and I saw people talking about the decathlon 1500, so I thought I'd jump in.

I still have the official meet record for the Decathlon 1500 for Division II colleges at 4:14.07 that was set at the NCAA Championships in 1980. I'm not even sure if they keep any other official records by Division outside the championship meets.

I think there has got to be other Div II decathletes that ran faster than 4:14 or 4:11, but might not have gotten that high of a score. I think I needed about 6,800 or so to get into the meet at that time. The meet record was 4:19+ when I broke it.

you usually take the best score (all their PR's) and deduct about 2-400 from it. so 8300-8500.

and they'd HAVE to run 3:35 without pacers at the end of all that shit. Good luck. thats the best a Mid-D guy could ever be. I am now never trying this event.

I don't have a registered name, that was the 1st time I ever posted anything, I just used one of my old screen names. I'm gonna have to change it to "Over 50" SOON!

The whole time I competed from about 1977-1990 I only remember a couple of other people breaking 4:15 or even 4:20, in the meets I was in.

One race I was in I ran 4:06 or so and the person behind me ran 4:08 something. His first name was Rich, but I can't remember his last name. I think he used to compete for CSU Stanislaus.

When I became capable of breaking 4:10, the toughest race I ever had during a decathlon was against Ed Dumas of UC Santa Barbara.

Here's a funny story about the only other faster decathlon 1500 time that I know of:

I competed in a decathlon in Santa Barbara in 1981, after I had just run my 4:14.07 at the NCAA Championships the year before. Ed Dumas was put in the same heat as me for the 1500. The fastest time I'd ever seen Ed run was low to mid 4:20s, so I thought I'd have no problem winning the heat.

I lead the heat for the first 3 laps with him trailing. He passed me at the gun, I let him go figuring I'd wait until about the 150 mark and go flying past him for the win. Well, when I got to the 150 mark... I took off HARD! Well, he took off even HARDER and just left me in the dust! He put 3 seconds between him and me in the last 150, 4:13 to 4:16.

I went back to compete again the next year, Ed was there again and also got put in the same heat as me again. I had just run a 4:08 a few weeks earlier, so I figured I get a chance to redeem myself for sure this time.

Well this time, Ed takes off and is leading for the first 3 laps! We were about 4:15 pace with one lap to go. I knew if I didn't try to take off at the gun, he was probably going to dust me off again. So I bolted pass him at the gun and and gave it everything I had. My coach told me that I had put about 25-30 meters on him with 200 to go, when he started to come after me.

He was making up some serious ground in the last 100 meters, but never caught me. I finished in 4:06.2 and he had a 4:07.3! We both PRed and I ended up running a 59 last lap, which is the fastest lap I've ever run in a 1500 to this day.

The decathlon 1500 world record holder, Robert Baker, who was helping officiate the meet and timing me, thought I had broken his collegiate record of 4:06.3! He congratulated me for the record only to find out it was still his, because my eligibility ended the last year!

That was almost my name that Detmer would have erased, if I would've taken that red-shirt year, like I had planned. Oh well, maybe next life!

I wasn't actually sure what place I fell in on the all-time list, but I thought I was somewhere up there. I had a list from 1980 that if correct, would have made me the 2nd fastest American and the 3rd fastest in the world. I wasn't sure if anyone else had slid in there or not.

I think if Joe Detmer keeps competing, he'll give the world record a run for the money. He's got the speed and the size to do it!
