as for all the people saying that concept is stupid, ask yourselves this: how else can you prevent needless filling of statbooks with every odd distance from 101m to 9999m on the track? once you've decided to take the time from the longer event, how can you be sure that any conversion to a shorter distance i accurate? you can't! you can, on the other hand, be COMPLETELY sure that it didn't take el Guerrouj longer than 3:43.13 to complete 1600m, because he completed 1609.xx in that amount of time. i'm sure he doesn't care that his 1600m is about a second slower than what he actually ran.
