yep. any world-class miler could crush that, of course, but it's really not worth the effort. hell, even the 1501m record is 3:43.13.

El G ran the 'WR' despite standing about 9.34m behind the start line. Same way as you could set a 5K WR from standing behind someone at the start line as long as you finish on the finish line.

The track was properly certified and that was checked, there was drug testing, the timing was checked, footage was reviewed to check he didn't step off the track at any point (Aouita had an indoor 3K 'record' not ratified because of that) etc etc.

So El G ran a 1600m WR - or world best, as it is not a recognised distance - despite running at least 9.34m too far. Whereas for those high school meets the IAAF has not checked track certification, timing equipment etc etc so they could not be recognised.

And they did not run 3.43.

It would be nice to think it was some random high school kid who could get their 15min of fame. But it isn't.

And for 1599m, and for 1598m... and so it goes on. Unless there was a random track race out there run over 15xxm which was faster and met all the IAAF criteria.

if you are going for who has the fastest officially recorded time its probably the person who holds the 2000 meter record as they would have taken the split at 4 laps

Just because the race was longer than 1600 meters doesn't change the fact that El G covered 1600 meters faster than any human before or since.

TRUE, but if someone runs a 1/2 marathon, for example, in 55 minutes, we all know that he would have came through the 10 mile and 20km in word record times, but if no splits were taken, then there is no record. So it goes for the 1600, if no split, then no record. There must be a time recorded. Sounds like Webbs mile of 4:01.81 actually had a 1600 split. It was 3:59.51. Someone else mentioned that some enroute 2km split is pry the record. Yes, but it would have to have been a FAT time or recorded by three hand timers.

However, the 3:43.13 for a longer distance argument makes sense. So, the World Record (actually it should be called a World Best) is, in my opinion a 3:43.13.

But the technicality of the question originally posted is interesting

The correct answer is no one. The IAAF does not have a World Record ratified for 1600 meters, and that's obviously what you're asking

No it is not. The IAAF does not recognize a record for 2 miles either, yet there is one and everyone knows who holds it and what it is.

btw am i the only one who thinks that you shouldnt be able to get 2 or 3 world records in the same race? I dont like the taking of split times and making them world records or world bests or whatever. For instance the recent 1 hr record that HG ran when he broke the 20k record as well i find that annoying- its obv not a big deal but if he was trying to run just the 20k then his pace would have been very slightly faster and therefore that record is not even the best he could have done.

Obv this is all nitpicking and fairly silly but i just think you should just be running for and able to get the record of the full distance of the race in any given race.

that's actually something i hadn't thought of. nevertheless, that's the way odd-distance "bests" are determined. not officially, in the way that actual world records are official, but as officially as such things are determined by the IAAF.

i guess, just as it's perfectly safe to assume that el G ran no slower than 3:43.13 for 1600m, it's *almost* perfectly safe to say that no one beat him to the 1600m mark. probably, if it was a VERY close race and it appeared that the other guy (Ngeny, let's say) might have beaten him to 1600m, they would just not award it to either of them. it's not a real record anyway, what do they care?

I hold this record. I ran a 3:20 1600 time trial, took a 15 second shit on the track, and them ran the final 11 meters. My mile time was 3:37, but the IAAF wouldn't ratify it because I didn't wipe.[quote]info wrote:

yes, pretty dumb, but thats what they did at the Arcadia meet, which is not a dumb meet. They gave him an official en route FAT 1600 meter split on his way to a mile race. BUT...

El G's 2k WR of 4:44.79 in 1999 saw him come through the 1600 in 3:49.60. The results newsletter by TFN list all the 200 splits in hand time but list the 1600 as 3:49.60, which leads me to believe that that split was FAT. If so, thats the World Best.
