There's a difference between personality and talking crap about people you just beat. This isn't the WWE or NFL. Look at Gabe Jennings, plenty of personality (though in a weird directions) but he doesn't have to run his mouth.
I personally think the Africans after seeing what he said about them are gonna come fired up and ready to tactically race...seeing as "Buster" has no teammates, he better be careful.

Yeah, of course we need personalities like Mottram. I was watching Prefontaine with some non-runner friends and they were all extremely amused that Mottram said "biggest balls" in the CBS interview. They all wanted to know more about him after that.

do you know Australians? Clearly not. They are huge talkers. Mottram's folks are both Brits. He attended Geelong Grammar, the same school that Prince Charles and Prince William attended. Besides the short time he spends in the states each year to run, he lives in England and Australia. The English are HUGE trash talkers. Clearly, again, you have never been to a futbol game in England. Also...you've obviously never been to a footy match in Australia.And..you don't hear the Ethiopians or Kenyans because the speak a different language...dumbass.

Yes he has it coming to him as well. He has a big mouth and I think the controversy it creates is good for the sport in some ways. However, but the attack on the Bekele bros was a bit much, it came off as arrogant and just plain stupid. It would be funnier to me if he had said that about someone like Goucher or Riley who obv arent on his level, but to say it about the Bekeles kinda makes him look silly.

Tariku ran 13.04 in New York to slaughter the field. Most letsrun posters were quick to defend Fam and Torres running 14 minutes because of the heat and humidity. I don't think T. Bekele appreciates the shadow most people keep him under...especially considering that Keninisa hasn't raced in a while.Mottram absolutely smoked the World-class field at Pre and again dominated in Ostrava. At the moment he can say whatever his aussie heart desires.

i agree the reason you are all getting uptight about the mottram comment was because the use of the word 'smash' made it sound agressive. if he had said well ive beaten his brother and he is better than tariku so i can beat him as well then it wouldnt sound half as bad.
he didnt say tariku was crap he said he wasnt as good as kb ( who incidentally is the greatest distance runner ever) so it is hardly disrespectful. also if you saw the flotrack interview after pre 2 mile, mottram was very respectful about kb sayin the reason he was not running was becasue he was not ready and described him as a ledgend in our sport- which shows that mottram isnt disrespectul to all his rivals and does respect them.
also just becasue you dislike a guy dont take away from his performances- mottram has just a good a chance as winning as anybody in osaka, if he doesnt then it will be because he didnt run good enough on the day but dont say he has no chance when he is currently displaying all the skills needed to win.
Fact: A large part of the reason why Mottram gets this kind of attention is because he's white.
Fact #2: The people who are giving Mottram most of that attention are corny white long distance guys.
Fact #3: Non corny white guys and practically all non-white guys still don't, and probably won't ever, give a shit.
As for me, I could care less; Mottram is just another foreigner who runs fast.
Honestly, he just hasn't shown himself to have it when it counts. He got smashed, as in embarrassed, at the Commonwealth Games, when Kenya came out to play.
The same will happen at Worlds, except Ethiopia will be there, too. He'll be in the race if it's >13:00, and it probably will be, but there will be guys there who can kick him down.
If they're smart they'll tighten the pace at 3600-4000, to take him out of his comfort level, which seems to be dropping fast last laps to end not-spectacularly fast races. If they're *really* smart they'll run beyond his ability from the gun, which don't forget they can do. Much of his competition can comfortably to 2s/lap faster than him for the duration of the race, and if he even tries to hang with that, the "Buster Smash" (ugh) on the homestretch is not going to be to be pretty.
I appreciate Mottram as although he's running under the Australian flag I feel he is partly ours (two British parents and lives most of the year in britain and last I heard a British girlfriend). He's someone whos not only good enough to compete with the Kenyans and Ethiopians but potentially beat them as well.
That said over 5k at the moment in the world I would rank him in the top 5 but probably no higher. Choge, Songok, Bekele (K) and Lagat I would all imagine could take him. Whether they all compete (a few out of Choge, Songok and Lagat will compete over 1500 and I think Bekele has already said he's just competing over 10000?) is doubtful and I think he will go into that final with a definite medal shot.
His real trashtalking only seems to have occured recently though, as far as I'm aware he hasn't been this "bad" until he really started beating the top athletes in the world. In my mind once you've beaten Kenenisa in a race then you've got bragging rights. After seeing him race so strongly against Geb in London, he's arguably one of the best finishers in the world.
Agree with comments re: Tariku, I don't think anyone gives him enough credit for his own performances as he is definitely developing into a world class performer, okay he's getting beaten by Mottram but he's also improving fast. Has definitely helped this season not pacing as much for big brother.
