Yep-sorry, it's Jama Aden, I believe the older brother of Ibrahim Aden. Someone correct me if I am wrong, but I think that's what Joe told me last year when we had a chance to go on a run together.

That is correct; Joe got to be very good friends with Jama and Abdi Bile and some of their friends from Somalia!!!
Joe's career was short; filled with alot of ups and downs, but 1990 was unbelievable from April - July of that year!!!
He dominated in the US and became very competitive internationally. A shame that the career ended so abruptly; he may be the most talented distance runner in US history!!!!!!

Matt has shown up a few times in the journal as has Doug Clarke (now at Kansas University). And Pat Zinn.
A friend of mine is trasnfering various races from VHS to DVD-one of those races is Joe's 3:49. If it's not already up on YouTube, I'll get it posted when I get the DVD.
That would be great to see on youTube (along with the '90 Pre 5k) That high 53 or low 54 last 400 was a thing of beauty!!!!
you said you had other miler's training logs.........are you going to put them up soon?
good work, please share more of his training logs
I saw Joe run in high school and he was pretty unbeliebable then! At Arkansas he blossomed into one of the best collegiate distance runners in history!!!
I saw Falcon fall at NCAA's at BYU and then saw him fall in '92 Oly Trials in New Orleans; he definitely has some problems when the race got crowded. If he would have run smarter races, he would of won 2-3 more NCAA titles and been in two Olympics!!!!!!
He also fell in his training log above. I saw him trip on basically nothing and flail around until he hit the ground? Very strange.
Even so he was the crowd favorite everywhere. Loved to watch him race.
What a class guy! Regardless of his mistakes, etc. he was pute class!!! My chances to see him in Ok City at indoor nationals was memorable; he won numerous indoor titles and it seemed like Ark won every year that he was there!!!
The Dream Mile made him a pretty special person in U.S. distance running history!!
When I was in HS in Texas during the 80's I would go and watch the old SWC Indoor Championships meet at the Tarrant County Convention Center.
The meet was run on a 160 meter banked board track. I watched Joe (and later Ruben Reina) thunder around those boards many times.
I remember having a major bias against any race over 800 meters (I was a 51 second 400 runner as a freshman). I was typical, dumb white trash that thought they "jogged" the mile.
Watching Joe run a 4 minute mile on that little track totally blew my misconceptions out of the water and converted me to the distances for good. Thankfully.

Didn't he also fall/trip over sprinkler head at end of NCAA X-C in Tucson, AZ....losing to Aaron Ramirez (U. of Arizona). Correct me if I am wrong.

I saw the Arizona race; Falcon fell right after passing Ramirez (Falcon would have easily won; no one could kick with him)

I saw him the next year in Virginia and the move that he put on the field (on a big hill) was decisive (race over)
The "non-All Star" world record in the DMR was maybe his best collegiate performance. Four Americans (yes, 4 Americans on the same relay team at Arkansas) and they were tremendous that day at Penn (I wish someone had that race on youTube)
Great job - throw some more Falcon workouts at us!!!
I heard that Joe loved that speedwork (might of been his downfall with the achilles tendon injuries, etc.)
I saw Joe run a mile, stop halfway through to drink a beer and get a b******. He still finished around 4:30
Where did Falcon go to high school???
He spoke at our running camp last summer. To hear Joe talk about that 1989 Penn Relays DMR was just awesome. The campers, the counselors-I think we all wanted to head to the track and hammer a workout.
Joe Falcon went to Belton High School which is just south of Kansas City. He was coached by Dave Denny, who also coached Matt Tegenkamp at Lee's Summit.
The guy who stared in the movie Apocalypto aslo ran track at Belton High School, there was a long running scene in that movie
