I happen to agree. Alberto was a mentor for many, including me in the early 80s. His form, while unorthodox, was smooth and efficient. He glided across the ground like a horse galloping. He used no waisted motion and was extreemly focussed.
He works hard and is goal oriented, so his success with his athletes does not surprise me. Driven and able to focus on the endgame until death approaches shows his attitude to get the job done.
People like to criticize Alberto, including me at times. It seems all people that get allot of attention are subject to scrutiny, no matter what. If he seems aloof , it's a matter of him needing to screen out the negative chatter so that can distract from his tasks at hand.
I commend Alberto for his successes as an athlete and now as a coach. I hear allot about drug allegations, unorthodox training techniques and the rest.
First, any unsubstantiated facts about drug use can not hold up in a court of law, so one should assume the best until proven otherwise. Secondly about his unorthodox style of coaching, like his style of running, it works.
Galen Rupp, Goucher's et. all show he can get his athletes to perform. I wish him good wishes and good luck.
I always thought that Al's older brother Ric had better form and more speed or "talent" but proved to be not as driven. But isn't that the question of training for long distance running—finding a balance between being a wimp and a maniac?
If you are a wimp you never get good enough for anyone to hear about you. If you are a maniac then you self-destruct before you get good enough for anyone to hear about you. I imagine a bell curve between the extremes. There is a day in the life of every runner at the peak when you have balanced everything as well as you ever did or ever would again. For Al it was April 19, 1982.

Do tell. How and in what context was he named in the Balco scandal and what evidence is there that Nike has ever doped any athlete? Nike sponsors many athletes so it will have its proportionate share of drug users but I've never seen any evidence the company has endorsed or encouraged PED use. Do you blame Addidas for Ben Johnson's drug use?

ricardo salazar took his "talent" to the navel academy. i'll argue he had a driven personality and is probably better adjusted to dealing with people than alberto.

From the NY Daily News a few years ago.

I have tested Alberto many times and I assure you he was the second most economical runner I ever tested, so forget how he looked running and concentrate on his physiological superiority (although he did not have a real high VO2max, which of course is good news to those who poo poo VO2max)

Which is good news for Hodgie-san, because when I look at that picture, I'm struck by the similarity in their positions! Other than the famous foot. Rodgers, as always, looks perfect. I guess it proves yet again that three guys with a lot of variation in form can still stomp 99.99% of the runners in the world.

In the book "Duel in the Sun" they said that Dellinger would give Salazar workouts to do, but Salazar would do double of w/e Dellinger told him.
