Galen has yet to win an NCAA title. Whereas Prefontaine would have had mulitple titles by this time in his career.

dude it is over 30 years since steve prefontaine ran and prefontaine still has better pr's than rupp in the 5k, mile, 2 mile and even rupps 10k is only 10seconds better than prefontaine's pr - oh yeah pre only ran the 10k twice and i believe his pr was basically by himself whereas rupp had some companygive me a break... you are either a troll or retarded

I CONFESS: " I SMOKE GOOD SHIT THAT DAY.........IF I HADN'T, I WOULD BE LAP BY THOSE GUYS AT LEAST ONCE." but who cares...no testing, and i'm holding my gold medals right now. ha ha ha ha......

no, because he has an eritrean gens.
so, who's allowed to run for the U.S. then?
who gives a f*** about NCAA?.....
Did I say it was better retard? No, pay attention. I said it was close and may be better considering the guys he raced were faster than those Pre had to race. This whole thread is stupid, Rupp is 20 years old. Rupp had a much better high school career than Pre, college is a different story. We'll see how the pro running goes when that time comes.
wtf - are you kidding me?Meb didn't finish 4th he finished 2ndLagat dind't finish 4th he finished 2ndKK set the WORLD RECORD TWICE!BK like Pre led going into the last lap of the 5k at the olymopics. He also won 4 NC XC titles and had ARs in the from the 3k - 5k.Salazar missed 1980 b/c of the bs boycott

have never finished 4th in an OLY running event! Hence, not better than Pre. Of course they have run faster, due to many advances in training theory, technology (tracks, shoes), nutrition, etc, but that doesn't make them better.
Ok, let me clarify this because I'm sure someone will say something. I know 6th is not as high a place as 4th. I say better twice above and that is incorrect. I am simply saying that Kennedy's 6th place might be more impressive, sorry about the confusion.
I hope Rupp not only breaks all of Pre's marks at Oregon, but destroys them. It would be nice for U.S. collegiate running to have improved somewhat in the last 30 years.
Im no pre lover but:
pres early season 27:40 was solo all the way
5k pr is better and more comp with the worlds best at the time
his mile pr is much better
Rupps 10k is great but he got towed along in a setup race.
But Pre went for it, dude.

webb has run 348 for the mile, he faster than all of the people mentioned above, including steve prefontaine who only ran 354 for the mile.
this sport is track, come on now people.
faster = better.
Bob was an obviously an outstanding runner and I was in the stadium to watch that race - he looked very impressive. That said, the '96 olympic 5K final was more notable for who wasn't in the race:Geb (world record holder) - ran the 10K Komen (12:45 that summer) - didn't make the Kenyan teamHissou (12:50 that summer) - ran the 10K Kiptanui (fomer WR, 12:55) - ran the steepleMossimo (12:53 that summer) - didn't make the Kenyan teamTergat (not sure his pr before the olympics, but he ran 12:54 a week after the olympics & 12:49 the next year) - ran the 10K onlyKennedy at 12:58 actually had the fastest pr of all the finalists in the 5k in that race. He ran awesome, but I would argue that the Munich 5k was much more loaded, in terms of the top guys in the world at that time actually being in the race. Put those guys above that I mentioned in the race and he is probably closer to 10th place. I'm sure some big guns were missing in '72 (Vaitainen was not in top form), but the five fastest guys in the world did not miss the race

Unfortunately for Galen (and people who believe he is better than Pre), Pre ran close to WORLD BESTS. Pre ran a relatively solo 27:43? effort when the World Record was what, 27:30? That'd be like Galen running 26:30 last weekend.
Plus, simply based on b@d@ssness, Pre takes the cake.
Has Galen ever even won a race that mattered?
I know most people (hs kids) overrate Pre, but you cannot underrate him as well. He was dominant for his short career. Its like comparing Webb to Ryun with Rupp to Pre. Webb has run faster but is he ever 'better' than Ryun?
Isn't Galen the same age Pre was in 72 when he finished 4th in Munich? Do you think Galen will get fourth at worlds this summer?
I don't.
Do you think Galen is running against much better competition? I do.

Ron Clarke , Bill Rodgers were one of the greatest 10,000 and marathoner ever, and they never ran well in the olympics.Druggies Cierpiski,Viren and Mills has won gold medals, and that's pretty much all they did. Olympic Games is VERY BIG TO WIN, but the reality, it is just another race, what about the other major ones?
Clarke nabbed a bronze in '64. How many people get medals in each event, eh? He was an altitude victim in '68. I doubt Mills was a druggie, and it's more likely KB and Haile are druggies than Viren. Rupp is definitely going to run far faster than Pre ever imagined himself running in the 5 and 10.
So it's time to print up some "Stop Gay" t-shirts!

well said. people are so quick to underrate Pre simply because they feel they need to counterbalance all the people who elevate Pre to God-like status. Pre was one of the best American distance runners ever.
He wasn't THE best, and he struggled internationally, but for crying out loud don't act as if he was of no significance just because you're annoyed by Pre lovers.
As things stand currently, Rupp has yet accomplish was Pre did. But assuming Rupp does not also die young, he may surpass Pre's accomplishments.
