Riverside is still Riverside but take a look at the school records. Even Hall would have trouble with the 1,500 and 5,000 marks.http://www.athletics.ucr.edu/trackfield/tfhistory.html#mtfat

I'll have to congradulate Irv next time I see him.
Look for bi-annual clinics in SoCal.
Thier track program did get thier scholarships taken away by thier director, but have been given partial scholarship money. In my opinion, they needed a to really change the coaching staff. Thier old coach is a nice guy, but has not had much success with his current crop of runners, with the exception of one or two. UCR can be a great running team, just need the appropriate coach and I believ IRV RAy can do that. I wish him and thier team the best.
How long has Ray been coaching Hall by the way, I did not notice it in his resume on UCR's website.? Thanks.
Irv talks about it in his book.
It's kind of a funny situation. You have to remember that Irv was more or less advising Mickey Hall and he had the final say on what Ryan did, which I believe, was not always the best descision. But hey, I could be wrong.
What kind of marks are the young guys putting up??? Anything to look forward to in the future???

trackhead...please know your facts...Irv didn't get screwed at UMKC...in fact if it was not for the opportunity he got at UMKC he would not be the new coach at UCR...
His classes were cut during the spring semester.
He has had good success in taking good runners and keeping them good. That is not always easy to do. He did this quite well at Cal Baptist with some good local talent. Many of the athletes that had good success at Cal Baptist were transfers from JC's that were good before they arrived on campus. Ray made them a little better, but more importantly, did not make them worse.
The question I have is this: Will he develope a complete track team or only have mid-distance and distance runners? Did his team in KC have sprinters, jumpers and throwers?
The greater Riverside area has a huge amount of talent and he should be able to recruit with Irvine and UCSB to keep that talent closer to home.
There is no doubt that his classes were cut but that is not UMKC screwing him...he always knew what the budget was...he was willing to take the job under the budget conditions and then he went out and sold himself to the PE dept. and pick up some classes...inside the budget restraints put on UMKC by the Missouri school system the University chose to drop the PE dept...it was not because of Irv and not directed at Irv, so he was not screwed...circumstances didn't go his way but it looks like it has worked out well for everyone...
Its hard to tell for cross country, Ive heard thier team needs alot of work. Theres one really good guy runner who will make alot of noise in the conferance and regionals. I guess well see. But thier track runners are did fairly good with a huge crop of runners running under 1530.

Their numbers appear to be really small right now, so yeah - they probably have A LOT of work ahead of them to build up the team. As for that huge crop of guys under 15:30??? I assume you are talking about the 5K here...where exactly is that huge crop? Checking results from this past track season I know of 1 guy for sure...possibly a 2nd...but any other distance guy seemed to be injured with something or another (a few others that could go under that were hurt I believe). That would be really nice though to see that team with a large group doing that, and then get even faster with some good training.
How long until...
A) UCR cuts track and cross-country in an attempt to get rid of Ray.
B) Ray pisses everyone off and just gets fired.
Not saying the guy can't coach, but he has a way of making more enemies than friends at the last three schools he coached for.
The return of Ryan Hall to greatness.

Who is the clown who posted this? Unless you were at those 3 schools than you don't know jack about what went on. Cal Baptist wasn't committed to keeping a winning program - period! As for UMKC he got there at the end of the summer and basically had to work with what was there. I'm not saying UCR is going to win the conference this year. But over the next couple of years they will get better and better. Everybody has takes but I guess we'll all have to wait and see..............
From what I understand, some of his past athletes are going back to him which is a sign that he is a good guy. My sources tell me that Mike Miller and Irv are working together again so it'll be interesting to see how that goes. He'll run fast again with Irv I think.
UMKC, Cal Baptist, peope, this is not a man who turned around the program at Wisconsin or Oegon, Who cares! Have theses schools turned out millions and millions of studs? Steve Scott was a long time ago ( and by the way doing a great job at that power Cal State San Marcos ) Sorry I forgot he cherry picked the great Ryan Hall.
He didn't coach scott until scott was like 40. Len Miller or some guy like that did the majority of Scotts coachin
Next time you see him, make sure that you congratulate him from all of us. Ass-kissing name dropper.
We know that you are a Stanford hater and consequently favor a Ryan Hall transfer, but that would be a major mistake. Hasn't Webb demonstrated that you don't cure what ails you by "running" home to momma and your HS coach. And, in Hall's case, without the Nike contract.
Is this how he will handle all of life's curveballs? Stick it out, give Gerard a chance, get your Stanford degree and then move on. he will still have plenty of time before 2008.
