I hope you like solitude because Ames, Iowa is totally in the middle of nowhere. You're like 45 minutes from the next closest town. They must have started that place for convicts or something to make sure they stayed away from everyone else.
Nice campus though. There's just nothing there other than fat, corn fed Iowa chicks and cow tipping.
you go UNI, be DI!
What part of Australia?
I'm from Australia too.
I'm From the gold coast, im currently attending a university over here, are you looking for one, I could help you out. give me your e-mail or something.
All of the D1 programs in Iowa underachieve big time. Whoever said something about UNI being even remotely decent is off his/her rocker. They suck, they don't know what to do with the talent they get and they are too arrogant for their own good. Drake isn't good at all, although maybe they will step it up a notch this year. ISU ran 1/2 good meets last year and thats it. It was the first year with Ihmels as their head coach so it will take awhile for them to turn around from their past coach. It looks as things are on the rise for them. Iowa placed 29th I think at d1 nats last year, so they are showing some promise. I have heard nothing but bad things about their coach though. Bottom line:UNI and Drake both suck and will continue to do so until they get new coaches that know what to do with their talent, UI and ISU both seem to be on the rise but they need to start getting in some more guns.
Ames is a fun town. Good bar scene, plus some good restaurants, movie theaters and what not. Obviously it can`t compare with big cities or some other college towns but its decent. I graduated in 2000, really enjoyed my four years there.
I ran three years of CC, quit during my third year of track. Its hard to figure out what went wrong before Ihmels got there. I mean we weren`t running 100 miles weeks, probably 50-80 depending on the person, we weren`t going to bed at 9:30 like Goucher supposedly did, but nobody he ran anything longer than the mile got faster on the track. Us Americans kept running what we ran in HS and the foreigners got slower. I mean we weren`t being trained by Lydiard or anything but our workouts and training logs looked decent on paper, but nobody but it together when we raced. It was pretty discouraging.
But they`re getting better under Ihmels. I think with time and some good recruits they could really turn around so it probably would be a good place to run.
Burke was an idiot. Plain and simple. Apparently 3 track workouts a week, not many guys over 50-stuff like that. Would not surprise me considering how quick ISU went downhill.
Ames is a decent town, ISU is an excellent school, but I would think twice about going there to RUN.
Coming from Australia, I would think that the addition of high-altitude training would be good for you. Consider the University of Wyoming or Colorado State or Weber State in Utah. Obviously Northern Arizona would be a good place for you, right in the hometown of the letsrun.com people.
