Well, from a 4:30 miler's perspective, I can see your point. But when we (as in normal runners) are about to win a race quite handily, in a significantly better than an average high school time, we refrain from sprinting all-out like an idiot.

Mottram actually acknowledged the final lap in his post-race interview and said what should be common sense to runners: There are times when you are going for PR's, records, etc but not every race is one of those times. "finishing sharp" i think was the term he used and he said that those races will come later

No, the purpose of running a race is to try to win. He won. If he was in second place I would imagine that he wouldn't be slowing at the line. Doing your best may bring some props in boy scouts, but in sports and life in general, winning is the only goal.

I compare slowing down at the finish line to not running at full speed around the bases in baseball. If Pete Rose were a distance runner, he would put in 100% effort regardless of his finishing place. The fans learn to appreciate this effort.

No, I think it'd be more like sprinting around the bases after hitting a home run. In both cases, the end result is clear. Mottramm knew he was going to win, plus he finished in a 55 (which isn't slow), and cruised to the line. I don't fault him for that.

At that high of a level if the runner can conserve energy and win when he isn't going for a pr, slowing down may reduce recovery time from the race. I'm sure he knows how to race hard and doesn't need more practice. You are an idiot, 430miler.

Ok cool guy. I hope that you feel good about yourself being a part of the "inner circle" of runners that know the secret rules of how to conduct oneself at the end of a race if winning by a large amount. You should write a book after you have graduated high school!

430 is right. "Rudy" Ruettiger acted like it was the Super Bowl every time the ball was snapped. Forget next summer you could get hit by a bus. Friday could be the race that Webb or Buster or Legat or KSullivan [is he in ] are remember by. Every race is the Super Bowl even if you are DFL lean.

430, you've got the start nailed (right arm, left leg) and the finish dialed in (run THROUGH the tape). Now how 'bout some advise on the whole running part of a race.
