You're right, the US government should cut off all aid to foreign countries, including rebuilding the Iraq that they spent money destroying.

Wetmore gets a lot of great talent. Seems like all the US studs go to Colorado, Stanford, or Wisco....with notable exceptions, of course. Are other coaches just supposed to fold up their tents and go home...? Surely not, they have a duty to their employers to field a good team, and if that requires going for foreign athletes, so be it. It makes the quality of competition better, surely Wetmore isn't scared of that, is he?

If you listen to his interview he compares his using american runners to building a car from scratch and using international runners to buying a brand new car. In reality what's happening is both him and the international recruiting coaches are both buying brand new cars. He's buying the American made Chevy Camaro's, Ford Mustangs and Dodge Vipers while the international teams are buying Porche's, Mercedes, and BMW's. Both cars are brand new and really fast, they are just built in different places.
This is a great analogy.
Talent is talent. Thinking you are at a disadvantage merely because someone is from Africa is a defeatist mentality. I am curious what he thinks about the Iowa State teams of the early 1990s. The Africans were plentiful but Jon Brown and Gary Lough (Brits) were also on the team. It would be interesting to see if Wetmore thought Brown had an advantage merely because he was "foreign." Sheffield isn't exactly the Great Rift Valley!
Was that Wetmore doing his best Lou Holtz impersonation?
You're right. Iraq is a suckhole for inefficiently allocated American $$$$, which is generally what the government does best. But I'm sick of the typical liberal whining supporting entitlements way out of proportion for certain groups relative to what they actually contribute.
I know people that were good, not great, runners in high schol who got no scholarship offers and shunned school because they couldn't afford it.
*school*
If they couldn't evidence that they could help a coach win, whose fault is that? If they were smart enough for college then they should've been able to sniff out some need-based aid. Maybe they just didn't belong in a university setting? I'm sick of all the typical liberal whining that undeserving people should be given charity simply because someone knew and liked them. Like US workers whose former employers go offshore.

Agree with Wetmore wrote:I agree with Wetmore....US Tax dollars pay for the development in US Olympic sports. Its all about building US athletes to compete on the olympic level....which is funded by US citizens....not for athletes of ANY other country.
Plus any foreigner on Mark Wetmores team will not be awarded one scholarship penny...They must walk on!
How stupid, it's CO tax dollars not US tax dollars, so all of the out-of-state recruits Wetmore gets should be considered in about the same light as a foreign athlete is. Wetmore neither said nor implied nothing about developing Olympians, illiterate boob.
i believe it should read "neither said nor implied ANYTHING.."
illiterate boob.
i dont see any problem with what wetmore said, i agree with him 100%, its like the yankees in baseball-just try to buy themselves championships year after year
If you watch the video again, you will notice that he says "bought their engine". If a coach so choses to go international to get his athletes, especially Kenyans, the coach essentially buys that runner. For instance, most Kenyans have no idea where University of Anywhere is, but they realize that going to American for free is a good deal. Some Kenyans have trouble getting the money to just buy the plane ticket to America, not to mention the thousands of dollars it costs for just a single semester of school. So of course they have to have a full scholarship to go to America.
Sure Wetmore gets the top high school talent in the nation year in and year out. However, these high school athletes have plenty of schools to choose from, with many of these other schools offering much more money (I know of a sub 9 two miler Colorado asked to walk on). Therefore, Wetmore is not buying his athletes, but rather selling his program and ideas to these runners.
With that being said, I personally applaud a coach who wants to work exclusively with American kids. Not too many guys are good enough and pateint enough to both recruit and train Americans, so they choose the international ones. And no, I do not see Wetmore being afraid of the competition; his national titles speak for themselves.
Wetmore is a true ass! Does this guy EVER stop whining? He is an arrogant, self promoting ass. He thinks that he is the only one developing talent. You can develop foreign talent too. What is the difference between an American that runs 8:20 for 3k in high school and a Kenyan, Aussie, Brit or whatever? There is no difference except that Wetmore is able to get the top Americans and he wants to keep it that way. If he can turn all the high school stars in the US away from schools that recruit foreigners then he has less competition.
Here is a message to Mark Wetmore. If you are as wonderful as you think you are then stay in the state of Colorado. You can be like Lydiard and develop the locals. That is, if you are nearly as good as you think.
It will not happen. Wetmore is talking all this shit like he is someone special. Very good coach - yes. Whiny little hippie baby - yes!
One more thing - you did buy your team and fly them in Mark! Did Ritz walk on? How about Goucher?
Sorry bud, they would have been good, maybe better running for Stanford and Lananna. Maybe they wouldn't have been injured so much and further along in their development by now?
Just a thought!
To be truly like Lydiard, he would have to recruit only runners from Boulder County. Of course he would finish in the bottom half of the Big 12 if he went that way.

The difference is I don't want some non-citizen taking the money I contribute away from some American hopeful.
That is not what Wetmore is saying. He is saying that he should get more respect because he takes his athletes from the ground up (what a laugh!). Why should Wetmore get more respect for taking an American with the same times (or MANY times better) than a foreigner?
Wow, are you delusional and paranoid! No "non-citizen" can "take" money away from anyone, the coach GIVES it to whomever has best shown that he can help achieve team goals. I suppose you regularly get pissed about all those welfare cheat moms robbing your white collar buddies of their corporate subsidies.
If I were a high school coach of one of Wetmore's athletes then I would take this as a slap in the face. If I were running at CU I would also take it as a slap in the face. Wetmore is saying that he is the reason that his runners run fast. The high school coaches gave him their athletes so raw that only the great Mark Wetmore could take them from the ground up.
Somehow I think that there are plenty of other coaches given the same athletes in Boulder would be able to duplicate his results

Nope, not delusional or paranoid. Just loyal. I choose to invest in AMERICANS who have EARNED the right to receive a grant. Wetmore is one of the main reasons I give money to CU over other schools I attended and graduated from. And as long as he adheres to a policy of developing Americans, I will continue to give.
So why do Wetmore's cars keep driving away from him in the middle of the night?
