A lot of people say take your 5km time, double it and add a minute, so that is just about spot on with what Phil ran at Telford. I only ran 14.14 this summer but ran 29.40 at Manchester BMC on a crap night, if Phil has come on since the summer, and it certainly looks like it then he could easily be in that kind of shape. Nobody questioned some of the times that came out of the Great Run 10k and plenty of those guys had struggled to break 14.30 for 5k.
Agreed. Nicholls has only done what plenty of others with half decent 5000m times should be able to do, as he points out himself.

Side note, I've been regularly informed of CLough's progress over the last few years as a friend is his training partner. His road times are definitely superior to his XC performances, and 31:17 is roughly what I'd expect him to run.
i actually think 14.08 would lead to this sort of time- also to note, the guy in second mr webb has ran well below 30 and he was soundly beaten by phil, so i think everything looks in place.
I want to say that the post involved was regarding a 28:18 time (which someone with a 14:08 5k PB couldn't run unless in significantly better shape! like 13:35!) but actually it was about the 29:18 which makes it seem very strange as clearly a 14:08 5k isn't far off 29:18 10k shape. Adding a minute and 2 seconds is a tough conversion, but given better shape than 14:08 as it's from the summer is totally reasonable :S.
Regardless, it was a great run, particularly on your own! In the photos can't even see Webb!
It isn't a tough conversion really, even if he is in 14.08 shape. If you look at what most people running in the 13.50's and 14.00's run for 10k then you should be looking at comfortably below 29.30. Don't forget that as you get quicker the minute becomes quite a big difference, if you are running 32 or 33 for 10k then the likelyhood is it will be something like double your time plus 90-120 seconds as you have to take into consideration the difference as a percentage of your 5k time. In other words if your slower, the amount you should add on will obviously be greater.
However, it is pretty much spot on if you look at most people in the 28.30-30.00 range.
I can Guarantee that the course is accurate and has been certified, I made sure of this before racing there in previous years when looking for a genuine PB myself, It is a quick course (2 laps out and back on the Silkin Way with a bollard being the fixed turing point)
I was there watching yesterday and both conditions and the field were pretty decent. Phil ran very well, going out and chasing a time. His previous race being the Ekiden Relays for Great Britain in Japan

David, I can see arithmetic is not your strong point.
14.08 x 2 + 1.00 = 29.16
14.14 x 2 + 1.00 = 29.28
16.30 x 2 + 1.00 = 34, ok I messed up! What I meant to say was that if you are running 16.30 for 5k the likelyhood is your endurance is not going to be as good so its probably not an accurate way of doing it, but of course that isn't always the case, it is nothing to do with the percentage of your 5k time, duh!

Hi I spectated at today's Telford 10k. Nicholls was in the lead early on but I dont think he finished. The winner was John Beattie in just under 30 mins. Steve Mitchell, Kevin Seaward and 1 or 2 others were just outside 30 mins. Conditions were perfect for fast times.
