the late 80s/early 90s adidas MD spikes - powder blue with yellow/pink stripes, yellow spike plate. geb wore them when he first broke onto the international scene, and steve lewis wore them when he won the 400 gold in '88 - pretty good range.

I graduated from college in 2004, so I never experienced the truly old school spikes, but here are my favorites:
For track, I loved the Ventulus...perfect for my footstrike. White or spotted, doesn't matter. I set all of my prs from 1500 to 10000 in them. Even wore them at nationals in xc...and made AA.
For xc, I ran my best races in the Asics Omniflex (circa 1997). They were just ordinary xc spikes, but fit my foot like a glove. Plus I was the only kid in my county who didn't wear Nike Zoom Country spikes...it felt unique at the time!
I actually found a pic of the Asics. These were my go-to shoe all through high school.
The original Eldorets (the pink and white ones) were a great, great shoe for the 5000 and 10000. The Puma Harambee (grey and neon orange) was even better. Same plate as the Eldoret with a knock off Jasari upper. Possibly the best spike ever made. I still race in mine from sophmore year of college (1999), though the are about three strides from falling apart.
JSC or the original Jasari
But your biomechanics had better be perfect.
original nike zoom I- white with orange swoosh. second would be olympic zoom d- white and red swoosh with white shoe and full plastic bottom.
This is an easy question. The best spike of all time is the original eldoret, well at least the plate is the best of all time. Someone posted that "you should see how many people in the 1500 wore the jasaris at 96 olympics", but they all had the eldoret plate underneath. El G always wore that plate until he had some custom milers built. The 800 olympic champ from 2004 wore that plate, as well as Kennedy in the 96 olympics. The spike plate of all time..The original eldorets
#1. '84 Nike olympic zoom D's....hands down
#2. Tiger spartan B ( anyone remember these? )

My coach had a bin of retired racing spikes back in high school, and I was given a pair from that bin for my first cross-country season. In between the freshman mile and the freshman 4x400 at my first indoor track meet ever (NYC Armory), I snuck into the Super Runner's Shop there and shelled out all of my money saved to that point to buy those spikes above. I wore them until the heel was ripping off from the rest of the shoe. They were amazing.
I killed them, moved to a less comfortable Asics waffle and eventually a pair of Kennedys (which I loved), but for a kid who knew nothing about the sport, that OmniFlex was a great shoe and such luck it was that I purchased it! Fit perfectly and I wore it through several seasons and several types of terrain.

Thos omniflex were very sweet indeed. I still have my pair from high school and sometimes run a cross race or 2 in them.

Amen, brother! Spike design began and ended with the adidas Tokyo. The kangaroo koochie leather was the best.

I forgot to mention my first pair of spikes ever; Tiger Spartan B. Very nice. I was so desperate I bought them a size too large. Great shoe.
What colour were the 84 olympic zoom d's?
Nike Vanquier(sp?) - Neon yellow and orange...sweet.
Ah, the Tiger Spartan B's were the best! At least for me..
Also, even though this is a spike thread, I sometimes ran on the track in my Lydiard Sao Paulo's--probably the lightest (4 oz), best (blue suede :-) beauties) racing flats I ever wore.
"84 olympic zoom d's?"
-they were a white shoe with one blue swoosh and one red swoosh. they were made in the oly year as a special shoe for their nike sponsored athletes. they had an all plastic bottom which was a precursor to the eventual zoom ultras and then the "new era" of zoom d's with the all plastic bottom (morceli's preference).
I had a pair of purple and green Nike International Zoom D's - purchased around 1994. That was my favorite color for that great spike.
Zoom D's were my favorite. The Eldoret was a good replacement. Currently, I favor the Vents.
nang nang's baby... u all know what im saying!
My favorites were the Reebok World Prix Distance- these were white, orange and black, and came out around 1992. They had nice cushioning in the heel using the Hexalite system, and I wore these from my senior year in high school throughout college. Reebok had a great ad campaign at the time as part of their World Prix line- it was a nice picture of a bunch of elite track and field athletes- I believe it included Arturo Barrios and a younger Suzy Hamilton- modeling their shoes. Anyone remember that ad?

Thinking about it, they were purple and yellow, not green.
