I don't think that any of us should complain very much when a company allows potentially-elite runners to develop w/out the pressure of real-life work. As far as the Nike Farm Team goes, OK, so they don't have a 3:31 1500m runner yet-- but they do have Nicole Teter, who despite having plantar fasciatis now had one of the best summers of any American female ever in June and July. She attributes her performances to Gagliano, so maybe the men aren't quite so talented/developed.
Also, the main reason the guys at NOP aren't running marathons yet (with the exception of Dan Browne) is that they're all working towards running <13:20 and <28:00 in the 5k and 10k, THEN they'll attack the roads. Tho', with the way things are now, they might want to modify those standards to 13:10 and 27:30...or faster. Tergat and Gebresellasie, anyone?
Basically, just let them hype-- the more money they make as a result of these developing, albeit hyped, projects, the more money they will put into them.
