Might not be the longest I walked but one of the most interesting.Northeast Black Out 1964. In New York City I had just stepped off the train at the Sheepshead Bay station in Brooklyn when it hit. I walked back to the Yorkville section of Manhattan thru the various ethnic neighborhoods of Brooklyn and over the Brooklyn Bridge into China town then north. The city was alive with New Yorkers helping others, good cheer and a "we can make this work" attitude.

Police Report says: Subject became disruptive over food quality. The meal order was not corrected to his liking, provoking an incident that involved striking and receiving strikes from the accompanying waiter. The encounter last approximately fifteen minutes.

I learned early on, too, that "runaways" (man, what an oppressive term) have to lay low and not attract attention. It is not in our nature to take sh!t and keep quite, right mack?
Did you ever make it to Florida? I got almost to California last time, but ran out of supplies in the Utah desert. Kindly LDS family, my butt. More like nosy %(^#_s who can't just let a kid move on without asking a bunch of questions. I'd almost dug my way out of that shed before the sheriff arrived, too. Next time: lay low, avoid Utah.
