I've pondered this subject, and basically we'd be f***ed if there were a shortage.

Reread the conclusion. None of that stuff is going to happen anytime soon, if in our lifetimes.
I'm getting off the power grid. Solar, wind, a little waterwheel to gring my grain into wheat, a couple cows and chickens, plenty of wood to get through the winter and my new invention: a super deluxe high tech non electric food dehydrator to make nutritionally dense and delectable vegetable/fruit/wheatgrass paste. Mmm mmm. And of course, the misses 'll home-school the children, a whole little army of them in the basement, learning to fear the wrath of God the way we are meant to.
I personally get around just fine on my bike and don't drive much anyway, so I guess I personally wouldn't be affected too much. If the whole system went to hell in a handbasket though I guess I wouldn't be much better off than most. We need solar semi trucks or something, in my typical American self-centeredness I never really though too much about how gas prices would hurt everybody else.
Mass suicides?
I am reminded of Neville Shute's book
"On The Beach". Americans are NOT prepared for inconvenience. We will be reduced to maruading bands
warring with each other and depleting the countryside akin to hordes of locusts or Sherman's Army marching through Georgia...or worse, something out of "Mad Max".
It'd be ALL OVER.
Stock up on Jack Daniels and either Codeine tablets or sleeping pills. An alternative might be a trip to one of those Amersterdam euthanasia clinics.
Can you IMAGINE a whole generation deprived of their Mcdonald's, X-Boxes, cellphones, blackberries, cable tv, SUV's, malls and the like. The mind bobbles.
The end of the world as we know it. At least the Arabs know how to live in the desert.
Why have all my BP oil-related threads been deleted?
Doggone moderators. Be consistent will you please?
The deletions were a shame, and discouraging.
This thread is so limited in focus, severe oil shortages would do more then just limit your ability to drive. Everything would severely escalate in price. It would be devastating for the economy.
thanks stone, it was fun while it lasted
Thats pretty impressive cause my work has no shower and I would not wanna bike to work even for 3 miles since I am a heavy stinky sweater and work in texas where it is quite hot and i have to wear a suit to work.....excuses excuses....
ewwwwwwww...well, just carry around an atomizer with
Old Spice
Probably because it is the least of our worries, but no one ever mentions the fact that running shoe midsoles are petroleum products.
We are doomed.
don't forget the steroids
See "Syriana". The crisis is coming to a neighborhood like yours very soon. Ready to start subsitence gardening?
I agree that when the trust funds are no good, loads of lefties will see the light and want to invade EVERYONE with oil.
(sound of nasty laughter)
Let's see how paris hilton could handle actually WORKING.
(more sinister laughter)
WHAT? No ATM's?
Man, is this a depressing thread.
I'd be able to cut down on mowing the 1200 sq. ft. lawn with the Deere to 4 times a week.
China gets on fine without using millions of gallons of oil we'd simple change the way our country is designed 1. stop driving for pleasure 2. don't buy hummers 3. kill all fat people thereby giving more oil to fit people.
China does use millions of gallons of oil, just less per capita.
you don't have to grind your grain into wheat. your grain is already as wheaty as its gonna get, though i suppose you could grind your wheat into flour or something.
