He did this off of 70mpw too! A recent interview with him said he had been training at 90mpw or more during college and always got hurt (growing a lot) and this year Jerry decided just to make sure he got in some consistent training, even if it's only at 80%. Assuming this guy can handle 100mpw in a while and he trains there for a while, I think 12:55 is very realistic in the next 5 years. He's said himself the 10k is probably his best event, even though he's a 3:56 miler! With that speed, and now his 13:04, he has a chance at running close to 27:00 sometime in his career.
America's proud of you Matt!
watched it on eurosport-teg went straight to the back and looked very comfortable. he just radually moved up s people in front of him slowed so he was always at the back of the lead group. looked very good and comfortable for most of the race until the big break came at 600 to go. but he still finished strongly with around 60 for the last lap.

Unfortunately he did nothing last year or even in the previous 4 years to warrant discussion. Hopefully that comment of yours was props for Tegenkamp and not slamming those who didn't bring his name up. Pretty sure he has surprised everyone with his stellar times this season. More good things to come from him for sure.
He had a pretty big jump last year running 3:39 7:43 and 13:25, pretty good for an american
5th, genius
2nd fastest US born runner over 5k behind Kennedy. Some great names behind him. Great run

Ah, the old "US born..." qualifier...

Keeping in line with Lets Run, the chemists drugs are working well this year

Why would he even think about the 10k. He just ran a 13:05 5k.!
Why do half the people on letsrun keep saying 13:05? He ran a 13:04, four ok, four. If he ran 13:04.9999999999999999999999999999, its a 13:04, NOT a 13:05. Every second counts when you are running at that level, so give the man full credit and stop rounding up.

Definitely not slamming anyone. I certainly didn't see this coming either, but I think it's great. Unfortunately for him, he's now on EVERYBODY'S radar screen, which makes him a sitting duck here on letsrun.com if he disappoints even in the slightest.
I also concur with the poster bringing up the 10k. The AR in the 10k definitely is softer than in the 5k and someone needs to take it down near 27-flat.
This situation isn't racial, it's common sense. The naturalization of guys like Lagat, Maree, and Boaz (?) certainly raises the level of competition, which is always a good thing, but to use their performances as indicators of the current strength, depth, and international competitiveness of American Distance Running is misleading.
Consider the Vietnamese national basketball team. Vietnam is a place where the majority of the population is quite short. There are a few outliers, but for the most part the Vietnamese basketball team is making a cake using different ingredients than many of its opponents at international tournaments. All of a sudden Dominique Wilkens and two or three of his 6'8 buddies move to Ho Chi Minh City and decide to suit up for the home team. Does this make Vietnamese basketball any better? The answer is no.
Uh, if FIVE guys from Kenya beat him, then he would be #6. Now who can't count, Einstein?
Why are/have Americans been so afraid of racing in Europe? HELLOOOOOOOOO get your asses on a plane and you'll run fast times. You ain't gonna run 13:00 at the Stanford INvite.
I didn't know Dominique Wilkens was Vietnamese.

Congrats to Matt on an awesome race.
With all the talk about who's going to break the American record, I would have to think that Teg would be very high on that list now.

you still don't get it. if you knew anything about running you would know that kiprop isn't kenyan, he's ugandan. thanks for playing.
It's a 13:05 if you round up, though...
No, its not, I hate this crap, the kid ran 13:04, not 13:05, why post it like that!
Teg!
Technically, by IAAF rules, anything over 13:04.991 would be listed officially as 13:05. I get the rest of your point though.
