Where would you get this cat? Are you going to adopt a shelter cat then lock it outside to get diseases and possible attacked by other animals? Outdoor cats have significantly shorter lifespans and generally die gruesome deaths in comparison to indoor cats.

Suppose advanced space aliens offered to take care of you, protect you from all harm, and you would live 200 years! But on only one condition: you can't go outside. You have to stay in their building forever, and can't go anywhere except in their custody. Most people would view that as imprisonment.

They want to hunt live prey, meet other cats, people and different creatures, encounter and survive dangers, explore the landscape, and nap in a hidden place only they know about. They know they might have a short life, but it's what they have chosen.
So your indoor kitty, with its imitation mice, and hidey-hole at the top of a cat tree/scratching post, and window for it to stare at the real world? Yes, you may have a long lived PET, sure. But it is not a real CAT. You deprive it of cathood, with your patronizing, overbearing fixation on its well-being.
Best thing to do is the indoor/outdoor cat. Your home is home base and it comes and goes as it pleases.
A friend and I are moving into a house May 1st. The house has a fenced in back yard so we are considering getting a cat. It would have to be a full time outdoor cat, however during inclement weather there is a shed it could go in. Any suggestions on what type of cat to get? We want one that is fat and lazy and awesome!

My indoor cat was once a stray, and ever since we brought her in we cannot even get her to go outside even for a walk. She lived that life and doesn't miss it. She's happy sleeping in a sunny window, having food twice a day, being cuddled, and playing with toys and chasing a bug here and there.
I've pulled a road killed cat out of the street three times in my life. I've seen a cat taken my a bobcat. Many others vanished, likely to coyotes. I prosecuted a guy who shot cats with bbs, just for fun. Bring your cat in. Yes there are some outdoor cats that get lucky, but most meet their ends very sadly. Cats live very happy lives indoors if you give them a little love and fulfill their basic needs.

I have a feral cat that got into my garage and had five kittens... After the winter was over... she moved them onto the front porch... then one day the front door was open and she started hauling them in the house. Stunning to watch so I let her haul all of them in and she took them to the spare bedroom and under the bed. The kittens are about a year old... they go in and out... but come in at night. Like your cat...The mother rarely leaves the house. the kittens get treats at night... so they are front and center once we call for them.
