I said it last year, JS could break Webb's mile record. Get him in a field with pros.
He's outstanding, but unless I'm mistaken isn't his best 4:02 something? How would he even be in the conversation of running 3:53 in the next few months?
What are you...NEW? Probably so I'll rant and discuss. Have you seen what this kid has been doing since last track season? I am one that believes he was better than 4:02 last year, but when he could've run his fastest, he was running relays. So take what you want from that 4:02 and I will do so as well. Same for his 1:49 800. He's faster and could've won that last night as well. But I am one that believes German Fernandez was one of the best ever if not the best. Never ran a race against collegians or pros in HS and never ran intervals longer than 200s his senior year He was running races like last night all by himself. I am starting to think JS is better. He has a growing Swiss Army knife of tools to use and 86'ing that Woodward Park record by 7s. That's a lot! And to close in 56.6 at 8:40 pace!!! How many of those 800 runners closed in 56:6 last night Now that being said, how much did Webb improve by when he broke that mile record at the Pre-Classic with pros? A LOT! If there has been anyone in the last 25 years since Webb set it, he's right in front of you guys. Get him in a race with pros and let the MOJO happen.
8:40 just doesn't mean what it used to. Years ago, an 8:40 was elite. Now a bunch of (relative) "no-names" were crossing in droves who simply aren't to the caliber that guys like webb, prefontaine, or Centro.
It's mainly the shoes ( ~1.5s/lap adds up in a 3200) plus bicarb, kids treating running like a professional full time job and probably (not pointing the finger at anyone in particular) drugs on the scene now moreso than ever.

1.5 seconds a lap is a totally absurd conversion. You think Jakob's 7:17 would be a 7:29 back in the day?

It’s possible. When Aouita followed Cheruiyot to crack 7:30 in Cologne for the first time (in a pair of Lotto spikes, for goodness sakes), it was considered breaking an almost insurmountable barrier. The previous wr by Rono from 1978 had stood for 11 years. The same was the case with his 12:58, which is commonplace now. I would posit that it’s way less than 1.5 sec/lap; but still significant.
Amazing run, terrible uniform. Gold shorts with a white top, really? Get that dude a real uniform.
I noticed something about this too. Let's talk about his hair. It did not move from the beginning to the end of the race. And does this guy even sweat?

The thing is, your generation has an easy option if you want to try to prove it. Ditch the super shoes and the bicarb. Show us what you can do unaided.

You think shoes are worth 6 seconds per mile? You think El G would be running 3:37 today? You think Jakob would barely break 3:50 10 years ago?

The shoes are not worth 6 sec per mile. Nick Willis (Olympic bronze medalist) once suggested they’re worth 1.5 sec per 1200, so 2 sec per mile. Add in the bicarb & other gimmicks and maybe it all adds up to 1 sec per lap. Maybe.
El G is maybe not the best example to use since he was from “that” era and never, ever looked tired after a race. That’s not to say he ever doped, we have zero evidence of that, but maybe we aren’t totally ever comparing apples and oranges.

You cannot compare high schoolers to legends in their prime. These guys aren't remembered for their first time running 8:40, they are remembered for what they did afterward, every one of these "no-name" boys could go on to be Olympians, no way to know which ones for another ten years.
The other arguments also don't make sense, there could have been runners with more talent than anything we've ever seen back in 200 BC, but they didn't have shoes, bicarb, or time to train. Admire their work ethic and determination, don't be the old guy claiming that people these days are soft.
