No he shouldn’t quit. I think his talent is generational. I just think it’s a shame that he won’t get the accolades he deserves because he happens to have talent in an under appreciated sport.
If you were in his situation, would you be feeling sorry for yourself? I find it hard to believe you ever competed in any sport. Being the best is the pinnacle for any athlete.

It’s a commentary on the state of the sport. Not a criticism of the individual.
The kid is a 17 year old World Champion and people on this thread are saying he should be happy and treat it like a hobby, do it for love not money.
I’m saying it’s a shame that he will never get paid what he’s worth because of the state of the sport and I get attacked.
Fame does matter and he’s doing pretty well on that front. Without it, he wouldn’t have a sponsor.
Nobody knows who he is outside diehard track fans. He’s not famous.
Advantage - Don’t have to put up with all the downsides of ‘fame’ - don’t have to worry about going out in public. Make some money, travel, compete, still can have a normal life down the road.
Some posters here have a weird obsession with money. They only make life decisions based on money. It is a very weird way to go through life.
This is likely the only job Lutkenhaus will ever have to do. He will get to perform on the biggest stages in the world for his sport being one of the best in the world.
There is an army of kids that would do that for free if they could. Your average Olympian would gladly die 4-5 years after the Olympics if it guaranteed they would get gold.
Here you are complaining that someone that will have more money than they can spend in a lifetime isn’t going to get more.
The guy would be worth $100 million if he was a 17 year old prodigy just about any other sport.
You are irrelevant. Your mom doesn't even acknowledge you.
The responses here are so weird.
I said I feel for the kid because he did something unreal at 17 and it's unfortunate that he isn't going to get paid like other the prodigies in other sports because track isn't appreciated.
All the hardcore runners here are all butthurt because I think the kid deserves more than he's going to get.
I'm not the one attacking the kid. You all think he doesn't deserve to get paid for some reason.

I don’t feel sad for the kid and neither does anyone else besides you. I did feel sad being a mid-packer.

The average Olympian wouldn't gladly die 4-5 years after the winning an Olympic gold. This is real life, not a Disney movie.
He's not going to have more money than he can spend in a lifetime. He's gonna have about a 5-10 year window were he can earn based on his talent. It's a shame that his tremendous talent isn't rewarded.
Or, maybe he should stay poor because you and others have some purity fetish when it comes to running.
This has to be the dumbest post of the week by far. The guy as a junior in high school already is a world champion. How many people can say that? Guaranteed he’s already making over a million this year and will have potentially another 15 years or even more if and when he moves up to the 1500. He has the luxury of being in public and rarely being noticed. Can you imagine not being able to go anywhere without being hounded by people and living a normal life? He will odds are eventually have at least one gold medal. Happiness is always greater than money. You’ve heard if all you do is chase money, you’ll never be happy. Obviously you would choose money over happiness and being able to live a normal life. Plus being able to say or show a medal and soon to be medals that you were the best in the world.

He's not going to be a world class 800m runner at 32 like you suggest. Rudisha won his last major championship at 27.
Why do you have a problem with the kid earning as much as possible?
Yes he can be. If he’s the eventual world record holder and stays healthy, he can still be world class into his early 30s or already be moved up to the 1500 like I originally posted. I was the high school coach of a world class 800 runner who made multiple American world teams and he ran his indoor PR the year he turned 32.
why do you need 100m? For hoes, for acclimatizing yourself and everyone around you to being extraordinarily wasteful and slothful?
Extrapolate that to it's end. Nobody needs more than food or shelter, right? Go even further. The food doesn't even need to have flavor. The shelter only needs to protect you from the elements.
You should be happy with a cup of mush everyday, while you sit in a mud hut.
I'm guessing if you won the lottery you wouldn't turn down the cash. Spare me the pious responses.

David Rudisha also had a well known drinking problem and Kenyans have an average PR age way lower than every other country as many times the real age is not known.
