It’s interesting. The thread seems trollish but if you think about range the answer is less clear. I’m thinking that Cooper L is not going to accomplish much beyond the 800 distance. The 4:06 doesn’t tell us anything. A 1:42 guy can run 61.5 pace in his sleep. CL is too big to be elite at 1500/mile. I’m thinking he is more like Rusdisha, Kipketer, and Yuri B. Those guys could all run about 45 high in the 4 and close to a four minute mile, but no faster. 58 second laps over a mile take their toll quick on a fast twitch guy. All the evidence shows that someone can only be so fast twitch before they experience rapid diminishing returns as the distance increases. It has to do with muscle fibers. I am going to predict Cooper L maxes out at 45, 1:40 (close to the WR), and 3:57 for the mile. So in terms of range I give it to Teare, but obviously he is not capable at any distance to do much better than he has so it doesn’t matter. Cooper L will rack up more medals.
this might be the most one sided question ever posted on these boards
Not necessarily. I hate to over elaborate and repeat everything I just posted, but the thread title is an open question about talent. Talent is unspecified here. If we are talking about which Cooper has the most upside in a single event, then the answer is irrefutably Lutkenhaus. That of course means his ceiling in a single event is much higher than Teare’s, who will likely never medal at this point or set an AR at any event. But if you include range as subject of talent, at this point you have to say it’s Teare. He’s a 48split, 1:47, 3:31/3:50, 12:54 guy. That’s impressive range, even if he isn’t the greatest. Cooper L is a mystery as far as his range goes, but based on other phenom examples in the history of his event, nobody with his skill set has ever been great in an event over 800. I think he is the white man’s answer Rudisha. He is a lot like him. Ridiculous speed over 400, but not quite elite. Rudisha ran 45 in the open. Cooper could probably run that fast or even faster. Both of them can kick off of a fast pace. As Cooper L develops and becomes even more tactically savvy we will see that there is really nothing his opponents can do to break his kick. I’m thinking he has even more raw speed than Wanyonyi. But he will never run much faster than about 3:55ish in the mile and absolutely will never come close to a sub 13 5k. I would be shocked if he ever even runs one and if he does it will be like a 14:30. Fast twitch guys can’t run distance.

Teare would suck at 400/800m and their ranges don’t overlap. The comparison between the two is which athlete is better at their best distance. Lutkenhaus has already won that battle permanently.

I don’t think Teare has split under 50, much less 48. If he could run a 48 he’d run 3:28 not 3:32
