I think everyone knows that not every interaction should be positive and reinforcing your own views - but these people often have no one to make them feel valued. We need someone to be supportive of our goals - if they are not harmful (even if they're kind of dumb - eg travel to every state or country or such) but to talk us out of our worst impulses (eg gamble away savings). When people have nobody to share their inner world with, they kind of lose touch with that notion - that some interractions should be critical.
In the 90-2010s, these people would have just lost themselves in a hobby or video games like civ, eve online, ffxiv, etc. but those seem to have never been preferred to actual interraction. For some humans that interraction is the hardest thing to obtain, and they will gravitate to what feels a little like it.
Like I said, Darwinism. If you're not someone who's valued by the people around you, then perhaps there's nothing to value about you. And from this it isn't hard to see why as he blames a computer program for his mistakes.

For almost SIXTY YEARS we have all been well aware of how this ends.... I remind my students to watch the sequence, then unpack to the entire movie....considering the rarity and condition of electronic devices at the time this was made, i.e. expensive LED calcs only for NASA etc, it is truly prescient.

Evolution is future-looking. Adaptability to changes in the environment is one of the key points of the theory. When the environment changes, organisms that adapt the best will survive the best. Which I'll admit has whiffs of tautology about it, because if adaptability = survival, you could turn that equation around and say that survival = adaptability. In other words, if you survived, whatever you did must have worked.

It's less about evolution and more about 'survival of the fittest'. Evolution is just a byproduct of the smartest or strongest surviving over those who are weaker and/or dumber over a period of time.
