I guess if Ben has a temp gig in the announcer’s booth today he can try and verbally humilate Cooper from there. After all, the Brit announcer for NBC was rather vile in his remarks attacking Cunningham just after the 60m hurdles finish, as in immediately after. Something of course he’s never done or would do btw when Grant Holloway loses.
Cooper has already won in some ways by making the final as a HS junior. This seems to have angered a lot of people. They don’t admit it but their negative posts provide the proof.
It is obvious for everyone else than perhaps some Brits that Cooper is at least one level over Pattison. And it will be more in the coming years.
This indoor season it has been yes. In 2024, Pattison was at a very high level. He ran 1:42.2 in Monaco. Unfortunately he got injured shortly after and hasn’t reached close to that level since really. I don’t really know what the OP was watching but there were no indications he’d be at the level of the top 4 today.

He beat Brazier and Hoppel in his first ever indoor race in February and wasn't that far behind Attoui. He looked good at the UK Championships, and in his heat.
You are correct though in pointing out that he was at a very high level last year before he got injured.
And the OP was a bit overenthusiastic, yes.
Cooper might peak this year or burn out quick (or, of course, get popped if he is doping - which is always a possibility with a 16 year old who runs 1:42. And the USA has had a few middle and long-distance doping busts in recent years, and not just the EA imports).
Jakob at 17 was arguably "on another level" to Kerr and Wightman, both in their early twenties already, and we know how that panned out.

Well factually correct on that first part, but it wasn’t an impressive season nor were those guys fit. Did anybody else at British Champs run sub-1:46 in the lead up? His high level is from nearly 2 years ago. Last year he topped out at 1:44 flat type shape not that competitive any more. Doping feels like a Hail Mary attempt. The Jakob comp feels strained, different events and a guy in year 3 of running not particularly comparable to Jakobs upbringing. Pattison can certainly get back to his best but the event has gotten better and he’s struggled post injury.

Coevett, just admit you dislike Cooper because he’s beginning to make your favorite “prodigy” of the past few years, Max Burgin, look rather tame. Cooper is a Ryunesque type genetic lottery winner, not a teen doper. And my oh my, have you POMs ignored obvious Brit dopers over the years. Especially old ones who suddenly improve to become double Olympic Gold medalists, like Kelly Holmes.

Oh yeah, Cooper has been making Coevett’s stomach churn since last summer. It’s killing him that Cooper is so far the star on the rise and that Max Burgin, while talented, has shown questionable durability.

Ben Pattison ran 1:44 last year averaging around 10 MPW.
As I just pointed out in another thread, 1:42 at 16 "in year 2 of running", when 1:45 at 16 was considred freakish only a few years ago, isn't somethiing you can say with 100% certainty is clean.
You're right that the Jakob comparison feels strained and they are different events. For a 15/16 year old to handle the intense training for 800m (from scratch according to you) and run 1:42 after rounds is crazy, and well above what even Jakob did at 16/17. You also have to wonder (touch wood) whether Cooper can maintain that without getting injured.

Jim Ryun went from zero training to sub four in 21 months. Things like this happen. That Cooper was running 1:42 at 16 in his third full season of racing isn’t what bothers you. It’s the fact that he’s a yank that bothers you.
I'm a Brit, and have always rated Pattison highly, but this is silly.
Lutkenhaus is more than a generational talent, he's doing things we've never seen before and are unlikely to again. He is a clear level above Pattison already (who is still some way short of his pre-injury levels) and that gap will only widen as time goes by.

I think Ben in his 1:42.2 shape would have had a shot yesterday, don't you?

Not with the tactics he used in his heat. That was silly battling with Mark English like that just to try and show the hated Mick who’s in charge. He needs more discipline and control. He needs to study Lutkenhaus.
Keino won an Olympic race at more than one mile of altitude. You’re so disingenuous in your hatred of yanks that it’s likely you and Deano are the same person. You’re extremely bothered that this summer a 17 year old will likely run faster than Coe ever did … or could. He’s already run faster than Coe at 400 (at 16, open and relay) and has a World Title. It’s tearing you up inside.
