Since when has running been a real sport! 😎 I ran my best 800 after skiing most every day when we lived outside Boise. Looking back on it, skiing really helped my leg strength and also speed. I wasn’t smart enough to realize it when we moved away.
Had she dedicated herself to the sport, it's likely she would have gotten a lot better from freshman to senior year. As it is, she's done all right for herself in life.
As others have already said, 40th in D5 (tiny school division) is perfectly fine, but not even close to being a "big-time runner".
California publishes the merged results, and she was 427th across all divisions at the 2017 State meet at Woodward Park.
To be clear, that almost definitely puts her outside the top 1,000 runners in California HS XC in 2017, because obviously not all teams and individuals qualify.
Yes, to those who have pointed it out, it's a 5k course and the State meet is held there every year.
Skiing, like running, skews upper middle class, even though running should really have broader appeal. Except it can appear boring.
I really enjoyed watching all the ski events from aerial to cross country to half pipe. Lots of impressive athletes, not just Gu. Curious what someone like Simon or Klaebo could run a marathon in.
Sking, triathlon, cycling rugby etc skew very upper/middle class globally, running on a global level does bring a much deeper pool of talent regardless of how much money you grew up with. Where I live the “I used to be a sesh head” “running saved me from drugs and prison” story is a very popular one for a lot of high level amateurs and sub elites.
The article goes on to say that maybe the next year she ended up skipping states in xc to do her first World Cup event and the rest is history. She did run the mass participation race at the Paris Olympics and ran 3:24.
Is 40th at the state meet a big deal? Even if she improves a bit from there, she’s not getting a ride at a top school.
If someone random said they ran 3:24, message board warriors would crap all over it, but when Gu does it, it’s amazing?
It’s fine for a fit person.
The CIF is tough. I was in high school in the 1990's. During my Sophomore year of High School I had a really bad off day at State which is CIF. I would finish back in 86th place. Two weeks later ran Footlocker West Regionals Seeded muddy conditions finished in 18th running 16:00 on a super soggy Woodward Park course. Led the race for 2500m before fading missed FL Nationals by around 17 seconds.
, she also had track times of 5:32 in 1600 and 11:55 in 3200. And fastest XC 5K time of 19:18. Not times that indicate someone on a big-time runner trajectory, but quite respectable times for a high school freshman.

There are two different ways to interpret "big-time runner". The common usage of "big time" is that the person is into running "big-time", meaning very into running without necessarily saying anything about how good that person is at running. There are plenty of hobby joggers that are "big-time runners". Last week, someone posted something from Gu's instagram that showed that she was reading a paperback copy of "Once a Runner". I'd say that's someone really into running.
Slammed when she competed in a real sport with more than 40 competitors.
Put skis on anyone in the Paris Marathon and have them try big air freestyle skiing and watch 99%+ of them break at least one bone and possibly their neck.
This argument is so stupid, have anyone at the Olympics try to PG against Peterbot. At least Fortnite is infinitely more competitive than her fake event.

We raced against her in dual meets in high school. Even then, everyone knew she was an excellent snow boarder. We won some titles we wouldn't have if she'd stuck with running. SF University is one of the most dominant xc programs in history.

thank you, Mr. Pedant, but context matters. Your way of interpreting it in this context is wrong.
Read it again: "Eileen Gu used to be a big-time runner - 40th in California state xc meet as frosh...."
The usage of "big-time" was being supported by her placement at the State meet, and the implication was that that was an impressive result.
Had it been: "Eileen Gu is a big-time runner - she was shown reading 'Once A Runner' in an IG post" you'd have had a point. Now go finish your freshmen English paper.
I think that it is awesome that she is so vocal about free speech limitations, censorship and other means of controlling thought in China. She is definitely a good little Red-blooded role model.
