yeah, Sam is great, but Cooper is setting out to be the GOAT. Sam, I figure, would end up being another Laros, very good but far from being unbeatable, while Cooper will become the next Rudisha.
Well…if Ruthe somehow beats Hocker in half an hour that might change the narrative a bit.
It won’t change a thing at 800m. Watch Ruthe running 1:45 and then watch any vid of Cooper running 1:45 or faster.
When was the last time that the US high school record was faster than the NCAA record? Yes, he’s in HS. No matter what the ancient track and field news thinks.
More like what the various HS Federations think. He is far and away the best HS 800m runner ever. No one is close talent wise.
The HS federation says that high school records must be set in high school races -
The National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) compiles records based only upon competitions its state affiliates sanction. Those would be scholastic dual meets, high-school-only invitationals and championship meets up through the individual state championships
In other words, as people are already ignoring the official rules and calling races run in professional events as "high school records,", there is no reason whatsoever to deny Cooper Lutkenhuas his due.
Fun fact - If we are only counting races run in official high school competitions, Jim Ryun is still the mile record holder.

In case people wonder about what I remarked on. Here’s Harris trying to pull a Langdon and then refusing to shake hands. He’s always been sore and a somewhat dirty racer. Jewitt is just so low key.
Remember when Cooper ran 1:49 (I think?) as a HS freshman and we mostly agreed he'd be on track to break Granville's record as a senior? Remember when we thought he MIGHT run 1:45 at the US Trials and how huge that would be? Remember Cade Flatt? Will Sumner?
At this point I expect to see a middle distance WR holder and/or World Champ who's under 20 years old, some time in the next few years. Either Cooper or one of his contemporaries.
This dude is certainly going sub-1:44 indoors. Might even get back into the 1:42s.
Great decision to go pro and get a massive contract. Dude is too fast for high school or college competition. And clearly not suffering from staying with his coach/situation.

That last part worried me ... I'm of the school of if not's broken, don't fix it. But who keeps his high school coach when running pro? Well, Cooper did, and that's working out great.

I can appreciate keeping track of records from races with ONLY high schoolers, but T&FN clearly refuses to move with the times. First their (temporary) decision to stop tracking sub-4s in a hissy fit over shoes, and now their insistence on keeping archaic rules for high school records.
At a certain point, people are just gonna stop listening to them.

Isaiah Harris purposely avoided shaking hands, as usual. Same thing he pulled with Jewett at the Oly Trials lol.
Thanks for posting that so quickly. Harris was always a jerk. I remember him cutting off Murphy at Nats some uears back. It was a deliberate attempt to impede and trip Clayton but Murphy roared back and smoked him as usual.

If you ever get to see him run in person, watch him closely after the race if he loses. It’s almost comical.

I think girls 600m? Athing Mu. Didn't she set the ar while in hs? Someone fact check me
And people think Sam Ruthe have a chance against him 🤣
In fairness, Ruthe is closer to Cooper in the 800 than Cooper is to him in the mile.
The difference is where they are on the world stage. I think everyone in the 800 is worried about cooper. He is a serious medal contender. Ruthe is sensational but I don't think many of the big dogs in the 1500 are legitimately worried. This doesn't mean he can't medal but the betting odds are stronger for cooper
