Incredible run by Ruthe to break the age group world record set by Myers. Tanner won in 3:53.36. Conditions nowhere near ideal either with winds of around 20 km/hr

Impressive company! 5 of the top 8 have Olympic or World medals. Ruthe could very well join them (and obviously move up the list) if he progresses well. I suppose Tanner could win a medal as well, but that seems like a bit more of a long shot.

A 1500m/mile list would be more telling and Willis has run the 1500m equivalent of 3:46.4.
He could have run a bit faster in this race. The pacing was not ideal; they went out too quickly (lap splits of 56, 59 62 and 58). If they had run even 58s, he would have gone 3:52.

Yeah Ruthe did well to hold on after that blazing opener. Announcer said they were targeting 1:53 at half?? Would love to see what he can do off 58/58

On a schoolboy's 60kpw. If he trained seriously he would be sub-3:50 already. Ingebrigtsen was running 100kpw at 12.
He's been running 40-60 mpw for at least the last year. Also what works for Ingebrigtsen does not necessarily work for Ruthe.
He also swam outrageous amounts of distance as a youngster. One week he swim more than many high school kids run [ i forget the total, but it was a bit mind boggling]. So like webb and LV, and even lance armstrong, he has a pretty crazy aerobic base from swimming. Does anyone know if he still cross trains a bit?

Yeah, why on earth, did they go out at 3:44 pace??? [ And apparently target 3:46 pace at eight hundred meters]
Sorry. But that's strange and bad coaching. If that's how it was set up. If we've learned anything in recent years, it's even pacing isthe best strategy for a fast time.
An even pace, and with him doing less of the work [ other top runners in the field] surely would have gotten him a 3:51 today. [ Not to mention less than ideal conditions].

Was definitely a bit shocked by how quick they went out. The pacer seemed to be struggling to even keep going after 600, and the slow down after the first lap was very visually apparent. Commentator was fine as usual but wish he mentioned how absurd the opening pace was

He's two years younger than Webb was when he ran his 3:53 in Eugene in 2001. Almost nearly as fast. Big Sam just had another gear left that Ruthe has yet to tap into - But he surely will soon!!! Staying healthy and avoiding burnout is critical for his arc of improvement to continue. Hitting the ceiling too early of one's ultimate potential is problematic, and it has to be mediated out carefully and strategically. He's looking amazing thus far and obviously has had great support and training. Changing up the formula to hit higher benchmarks involves calculated risks that he must be willing to take, while at the same time, maintaining his love and joy of raw competition.
