She never chased critical validation or trends. She made what she wanted, when she wanted, and survived an industry that chews artists up. Longevity matters. Staying power matters.
After watching this video, I am not sure how authentic her "punk princess" persona is.
You see. All the proof you need is in this video. The music industry is not actually about music. It’s about selling a brand to a consumer demographic. It doesn’t matter if they can’t sing, as you can clearly hear how dreadful Lavigne is in this video. She is just another one of hundreds of pop stars that the music industry promotes for record sales. The music is fake music designed by a recording engineer. The performers are show business actors who are willing to sing any genre the producer tells them to. In Lavigne’s case they saw an opportunity to capture the rebellious teen market. With a little eyeliner, torn jeans, and the right backing track, they realized she had the perfect look to sell their pop punk brand. She could look believable. It didn’t matter that she has no talent. Show business is all one big magic trick. Everything behind the scenes is fake.

So she is clearly another music industry phony. Almost all of them are. Ice Cube attended UCLA before joining NWA. Tupac was on a high school themed tv show before he released his first record. Taylor Swift sang country before transitioning completely to pop break up songs. Alanis Morrisette was a Canadian pop idol before her agency figured she could be better marketed as alternative rock. It’s all just show business and most of these people are just phonies. If they thought they would make more money playing conga drums, they would do it.

I don't understand how any of these things make a person a phony. I was an architect before I became a physician. Am I a phony cardiologist? Is a person not allowed to change the focus of their job?

Come on Doc. That isn’t what I am talking about and you know it. You are talking about a career change. I was referring to cases where these recording artists are presented as one thing, and are totally different people when the mic isn’t on or the camera isn’t rolling. You know what I meant.
"Sk8er Boi" was released in 2002, while "You Belong With Me" didn't come out until 2008.
Taylor Swift’s music isn’t good either. She’s the most boring over-rated super star ever. Bad vocalist who sings mostly break up songs and isn’t a very fluid dancer. Having said that, and it’s mostly because she has recorded so many songs at this point, a few of her songs are at least somewhat listenable. It’s almost like she accidentally gets it right occasionally. But the majority of her music sucks and she is an egomaniac. She is better than Avril Lavigne, but not by much.

They're just a producer who is changing the product they are making. Not really sure why an actor who plays markedly different roles gets praised for their range while a musician who essentially plays different characters gets called a phony.
They date when they're young, she dumps him because hes not cool. He has baggy clothes. Really not that embarrasing or reasonable to finish the relationship over clothing style.
He subsequently becomes super successful and affluent in his music career.
In the meantime "shes feeding the baby at home alone". In this time the song states she's become a single mother. Ethnicity of child is unspecified.
The fact shes at home suggests she's in receipt of benefits/welfare. Her life is going nowhere.
She turns up st his show. He now has access to high value females, his life is going great. A superstar.
The song suggests hes currently dating.
He's then probably emotionally coerced to taking her and her kid on, despite being affluent and successful and with access to better women.
Hes only 5 years older. So still only in his 20s. Too young for this life after his financial successes.
Its annoying that women have this level of entitlement and self-worth.

It’s not the same thing. The music producers who marketed Lavigne expect her fans to actually buy into her fake persona. The same thing with Taylor Swift. She was initially a country music singer songwriter even though she isn’t even from the south or west. She’s from Pennsylvania. I guarantee several of those rap stars from over the decades did not have anywhere near as bad a life growing up as their fans are led to believe. They are marketed as gangsters who have escaped urban poverty. In reality, I am certain their histories are greatly exaggerated.
Now actors on the other hand. Nobody really believes Jack Nicholson is a marine corps colonel in Guantanamo Bay. Nobody believes Dustin Hoffman is an autistic savant one minute and then Captain Hook the next. Nobody believes that Meryl Streep is Julia Child and then later turns into Margaret Thatcher. When an actor gives a great performance and can be convincing in a very different role, then it’s impressive. We know that pretending is their job.
Yeah there’s some overlap. David Bowie and Madonna played different characters over the years and reinvented themselves. That’s totally different then Alanis Morrisette playing pop music and then later convincing millions of people that she is this free-spirited, feminist, neo-hippie alternative rock star when she never played rock until somebody thought it was a good sales strategy. The former example with Bowie and Madonna is honest, whether it’s your music taste or not. The example of Alanis is an attempt by the music industry to manipulate customers into believing a fake persona to sell records. The two examples are different and I wish you could see that. Avril Lavigne belongs to the second example. She was as fake in the early 2000s as they come.
when i saw the video of avril getting it up the @ss it did take away from the standing on the bridge vibe. of the two, id prefer i'd only seen parts of the standing on the bridge video.

Madonna? Really? What makes her different from Alanis or Taylor? They all reinvented themselves for either commercial or artistic reasons (or some combination of both). Alanis and Taylor both had commercially successful careers in music business before their reinvention.
Avril is different because her reinvention came right before her major label debut after singing country/folk for years. I don't really care which persona is real. (Maybe both of them are real.) And if someone likes her punk songs for what they are, good for them. But being "authentic" is not the reason to like her music.

You may not care about authenticity and you are more than entitled to your opinion. If you want to listen to fake music by somebody lying to you, go ahead by all means. To me that is like Joe Pantoliano’s character in The Matrix when he decides to make a deal with agent Smith so he can forget the real world of awareness of the machines and go back to living a lie being plugged into The Matrix. Ignorance is bliss right? Well you are contributing to a highly unethical music sales game when you buy or listen to fake music. The music execs selling you all the crap are laughing all the way to the bank and smoking cigars on their yachts off the coast of Monaco. Any purchase of their glutenous lifestyle with your money is partially your enabling, even if you just bought a small portion towards their overall sales revenue. So your disregard for authenticity contributes to the overall big picture disregard for authenticity, which in turn enables bad quality music. You see ignorance isn’t quite bliss. When it’s willful it’s the diminishing of music quality, which leads to stale culture, which leads to the inevitable destruction of society. If you ignore a problem or act like it doesn’t bother you, you become one of the enablers responsible for the problem. I hope I explained that to you well enough.
It’s definitely one of the more stupid songs to ever become a hit. And Avril Lavigne has to be one of the least talented individuals in the history of popular recorded music. She can’t sing, her lyrics are banal and shallow, she is musically illiterate, she can’t play instruments at a performance level, her music videos suck, she can’t dance, her fashion is dreadful, she’s not very pretty, and as far as being some kind of representative of punk….get real. Her music has no authenticity or subversion compared to real punk music. Everything about her push by MTV and record companies was based on marketing to naive rebellious spoiled middle class teenagers. It was completely imaged based and the music was carefully designed by the engineers to appeal to that consumer demographic. Avril Lavigne was God awful. One of the five worst popular music acts of all time. She makes Katy Perry and Miley Cyrus sound like Maria Carey and Whitney Huston. Avril Lavigne sucks.

If you really want to say that Avril Lavigne can't sing...um ok then.
Yeah, she can’t sing. And the video you posted is further proof she can’t. For that song the producer double tracked her vocal lines and adjusted various settings on the computer editing software. You clearly haven’t heard a real vocalist. Try listening to Aretha Franklin, Tina Turner, Ray Charles, or Steve Perry and see if you still think Avril Lavigne can sing.

Thanks for you for revealing to us that you are a chronically online, Jordan Peterson and Andrew Tate influenced a**h*** who uses thinly veiled racist and supremacist rhetoric to incite people online. Do better. Be better.
