Sure it can be done.
85% easy and 15% marathon pace. I ran my first sub-3 at age 50 doing just this.
I was prioritizing mileage and since everything faster than MP gives me sore calves for several days, I did no speedwork at all.
In a hypothetical scenario where I did speedwork without getting injured, I would've run maybe 2 minutes faster, no more.
This is basically what I'm doing right now
Nothing but steady running all week. Aiming for 70-80 mpw this winter.
Long run 24-36km (15-22 miles) on the weekend, with marathon pace elements embedded in that from 10xMile on up to 5x5k or a straight 10-miler at MP, etc. That is my only "workout."
If any only if I tolerate this well for a few months, I'll consider adding a threshold/LT2 workout mid-week.
For context, I'm pushing 50 years old and honestly going under HMP leaves me wrecked for too long to be worth it. But I think I can grow the engine pretty well on volume and LT1/MP.
