because the people around him are tall but significantly shorter than him. That's why. Also, camera angles make everyone look taller from what I've seen with sports shots. Gymastics is a great example. The girls look so big and muscular when the camera is panning them heading to their routine and coming from their routine but that's because they aren't being filmed from the perspective of someone who is 6 foot tall.
Same thing applies here. The camera filming the race is probably filmed from the perspective of someone who is average height, roughly 5'8. Maybe even smaller since it's easier for shorter people to maneuver a camera.
