One race I happened to watch last weekend was the mile at the Maine State Meet, and I saw a racing dynamic that plays out so often. Cam Meyer (SO Bowdoin) is an established strong runner in D3, and was leading the race from the start. Her teammate Audrey Stevens (SO Bowdoin) was shadowing her, running stride-for-stride. Audrey was our Surprise Performer two weeks ago. On the final lap, Audrey put on a speed burst and passed Cam to win it. You see this so often: the runner who shadows the race leader ends up taking it. It's hard for the leader to "put it away" when you see that second runner sticking with her. That's racin'.
On to the results.
--------------------
800
Kaylee Hale (SO Bowdoin) moved into the Top Ten of NESCAC with her 2:18.50 (actual 2:20.10) win on the flat track at Bates. These Bowdoin sophs, I tell you.
Mary Elliot (SR Middlebury) won the 800 at the Tufts 6-Way, with a 2:19.24 (actual 2:20.85).
Olivia Doherty (SR Colby) ran a 2:19.93 (actual 2:21.54) at Maine States. Olivia comes at the 800 from a sprinters background.
Maya Levine (SO Amherst), one of our Surprise Performers last week, continues her strong running with her first college 800 time of 2:20.37 (actual 2:21.99).

1000
Terrific finish at the Tufts 6-Way for this event.
Piper Lentz (SR Amherst) won the race with her new PR of 2:55.40 (actual 2:57.32). Piper led the race from start to finish.
However, Lily Simmonds (FR Tufts) made it really competitive. Lily was over 4 seconds behind Piper after three laps, a meaningful gap in this shorter race. She ran the fastest 4th lap of the race, but was still ~3 ½ second behind Piper. Lily then threw down a ridiculous 33.3 second final lap, 3 seconds faster than anyone else in the race. She finished just 0.28 seconds behind Piper with that blistering kick, running 2:55.68 (actual 2:57.60).
Laura White (FR Bowdoin) won the 1000 at Maine States with her 3:01.59 (actual 3:03.57), leading wire to wire.
Kayleigh Forde (FR Tufts) moved into 8th place in the NESCAC with her 3:00.08 (actual 3:02.05).

MILE
Deirdre Flanagan (JR Tufts) built on her impressive 3000 from last weekend, winning the mile at Tufts 6-Way in 5:05.48 (actual 5:08.51). Deirdre played the role of a boa constrictor in this race. After two laps, she was 13th. She made a big move the third lap to pick up 6 spots to move into 7th. She then picked off one or two runners ahead of her each lap that followed, slowly squeezing the field until she won it.
Kaya West (JR Tufts) finished next, with her 5:06.76 (actual 5:09.80). This was Kaya's first ever mile race, after focusing on the 800 and 1000 her previous seasons. She has done the 1500 outdoors, and this performance was a great pickup on those times.
Samara McVey (SO Tufts), one of our Surprise Performers from three weeks ago, continues her great season with a new PR of 5:07.14 (actual 5:10.18).
Julia Dolce (SR Tufts) rounds out our Jumbo milers, with her 5:07.98 (actual 5:11.03).
--------------------
3000
Claire Palmer (FR Middlebury), the XC superfrosh, set her new PR of 9:46.60 (actual 9:51.63) to win the Tufts 6-Way. That's a tidy 3 ½ second pickup from her mid-January time.
Elizabeth Donahue (SR Tufts) was second, and set down her sub-10 marker for the season with her 9:58.44 (actual 10:03.57). She held the #2 spot in the race for all but one of the 15 laps.
Zui Chinchalkar (FR Amherst) crept right up to the sub-10 threshold, going 10:00.03 (actual 10:05.17). She's ranked 8th in the NESCAC.
Taylor Harris (SR Hamilton), NCAA Cross Country Championships qualifier, got a new PR at Utica Blue & Orange with her 10:06.38 (actual 10:11.58). Taylor is having a great senior year.
Flora Biro (SO Amherst) ran a similar time to Taylor, with her 10:06.58 (actual 10:11.78) at the Tufts 6-Way.

5000
Not much 5000 racing, but we got a couple results from Maine.
Mikayla Ferguson (SO Bates) won the Maine States with her 18:37.85 (actual 18:46.41). This was her first ever 5000. She was in 2nd place every one of the 25 laps, except the final one where she dropped the hammer, running a 36.04 second lap. That was over 3 seconds faster than anyone else.
Andrea Becker (SR Bowdoin) was close behind Mikayla in Maine, running 18:39.53 (actual 18:48.10). That was a nice pickup on her previous best of 18:54.46 set outdoors in 2024. Go senior!

DMR
Hamilton (Emma Chrismer, Ruby Austin, Nora Burroughs, Emily Pogozelski) moved into second place in the NESCAC with their 12:23.45 (actual 12:31.42).
--------------------
4 x 800
Bowdoin (Audrey Stevens, Lauren Isbell, Lex Davis, Cam Meyer) went 9:36.98 (actual 9:43.64) to move into 4th place in the NESCAC.
Bates (Lucy Paynter, Kylee Fuller, Kylie Musante, Hannah Pawlowski) ran 9:40.83 (actual 9:47.53) to move into 5th place.

MVP
Piper Lentz (SR Amherst) gets the nod for winning the Tufts 6-Way 1000 in 2:55.40. This was her first time going sub 3, another senior having her best season! And she held off the furious kick of Lily Simmonds to take it.
Claire Palmer (FR Middlebury) is MVP for her continued excellence in the 3000, now at 9:46.60. She's now 4th in the conference, trailing only Kate Tuttle, Morgan Eigel, and Grace McDonough. No Audrey Maclean this season? No problem. Claire ensures the Panthers continue to roll.

BIG-TIME PERFORMANCES
A Jumbos affair this week.
Lily Simmonds (FR Tufts) leads the list with her 2:55.68 1000 that included that 33 second final 200. The rookie is now #4 in the NESCAC.
Deirdre Flanagan (JR Tufts) was the top NESCAC performer for the weekend, with her outstanding 5:05.48. That was roughly 8 seconds better than her mile time from mid-January.
Elizabeth Donahue (SR Tufts) was big-time for her sub-10 3000. The senior is having a great year.
Zui Chinchalkar (FR Tufts) is another rookie doing great things. She got that 10 flat 3000, placing her 8th in the NESCAC.

SURPRISE OF THE WEEK
Annika Carpenter (FR Bates) came though with a solid 1000 at Maine States, running 3:11.36. Annika wasn't on the varsity XC squad for the Bobcats, and her mile time at NESCI last week was 5:39.98. Her 1000 this past weekend would be the equivalent of running 5:29.91 for the mile. That's a 10 second pickup in one week! Well done rookie.
