Myers took the win at the Australian XC Trials over Seth O'Donnell and Morgan McDonald. Impressive for the 19-year-old 1500m star.
This was a selection event so perhaps it ran more tactically, giving way for Myers to kick to a win. Nevertheless, he clearly has endurance as is so common among the top 1500m athletes today.
I'm curious, where do you think he would have placed at NCAAs?
Well, he beat Morgan McDonald (3rd) who was an NCAA champ himself not so long ago. So, it’d definitely be up there in the top 5 or 10 at least.
Better yet what about Jakob? He's younger than some of the All Americans
Honestly, you could make a case for 19 year old Jakob winning over the current field, let alone now. People forget how good he was that year because he faded to 5th trying to win the 5 in Doha, but he also pushed Gebriwhet to the line in a 13:02 race where they both closed in 52.
For sure if he had been competing in the NCAA instead of Euros he would be a 4 time defending champ since age 20.
Jakob easily wins NCAAs at 18 in 2018. Morgan McDonald won that year and only had a PR of 13:15.
Jakob by then had run 3:31 and 13:17....but that 13:17 was to WIN the European Championships - closing in 54 while relaxing the whole last 50m and celebrating a lot the last 20 meters.

I think the US runners underestimate how goos Seth O is at cross country.
This is one of Cam's most surprising wins in my book.
He was absolutely towelled up over 5k at Noosa Bolt in previous years and now he's winning 10k cross against a former NCAA XC Winner, former national Cross champion and a world champs 5k rep.

Jakob should be able to beat Habtom Samuel. Dont get me wrong, Habtom is a 26:50 guy but hes around the level of the guys who Jakob beats at Euro Cross. The next step up has always been the question- maybe we find out in Tallahassee.
Yeah, Jakob not only beats the 26:50 guys, he completely destroyes them.
In the 2024 Euro XC he put about 2 sec per 100m on Ndikumwenayo and Almgren over the last 700m. Crippa was the only one in the front group who managed to hang on a little - Crippa "only" lost 1 sec per 100m over the last 700m.
Why is Jakob so much faster in the finish? It can only be explained with a superior aerobic capacity because Jakob isn´t 7-14 sec faster than his competition in a single 700m.

Gebrhiwet and Jakob finished in 53 in the DL London 2019 5000m when Jakob was 18. He had just turned 19 in Doha.
If Jakob had been in the NCAA, he would have trained for 10k xc, which would mean no one was going to beat him. He ran 3:31.18/13:17.06 at 17 the summer before his 18th birthday and what would have been his freshman year of college. He also would have had every shot at 1500/mile/3000/5000x2 titles that year.
Compare Cam to Rocky Hansen and Gary Martin. Rocky was 2nd at NCAA xc. Right now, he is better at 5000m and 10k xc; he will probably beat Cam's current 3k pr this winter (but it's a moving target); and the gap at 1500/mile is exaggerated by Hansen's inconsistent health. Myers is a pure miler right now but showing signs of a future at 3k/5k as well with the improved xc chops. Gary is close in the mile, 3:48.82 against pros and possibly better at xc, 7th at NCAA but hard to say (Morgan may not be in top shape and NCAA is much tougher than when he dominated).
Cam is an absolute phenom in comparison to these guys, considering his age, but the Americans are full-time collegians and not training or usually competing with pros, so some of their pr's are unrepresentative of their talent. I expect Hansen and Martin to drop their 3k or 5k pr's decisively at BU next week.
Cam’s future is in the 5,000m. He struggled to get through the rounds this year. 3:29 is blazing fast but heaps of guys can do that these days. He’s only run 1:47. Nothing indicates he could run much faster. That’s solid for a 15 guy these days but it could be lethal in the 5,000m.
