It’s interesting because several years ago he would have forgone college to “go pro”, but now with the NIL deals he’ll actually get more exposure running in college and get a degree and get $ from the NIL deal
"going pro" really is a non-sequitur that is such a wide spectrum it means next to nothing.
Remember, one can be a "pro" and earn merely a gear sponsorship or measly prize money for finishing 8th in some non-sense competition.
The landscape has COMPLETELY shifted and the NCAA is akin to a new, parallel professional league. So in this sense, it's really only a benefit to join the ranks of the NCAA whereby he can still financially benefit.
The state of Maryland is not exactly a sprint powerhouse—not like Texas or Florida. Yet Joe Lee put together a high school 4*400m team that ran 3:06. That’s not just recruiting…there are few runners to recruit in Maryland at that level.
In addition to wondering about the coach, I wonder what other 400m runners will come out of the woodwork to commit to Maryland? The whole setup strikes me as something more out of the LeBron playbook than your typical high school recruiting process.
Joe Lee is at minimum a great coach, but I would push back on Maryland (well, really the DMV) not being a great place to recruit.
At the top end I think the talent is comparable to Florida, California, Georgia.
Same dynamic with Football/Basketball, TON of 5-star talent coming out of this area. But sure, it doesn't quite have the star football players always run track culture that Texas does.
I'm a UMD sports fan and I hope more locals stay home. I wish success for the program and I don't really care who the coach is as long as they are good.
He would have done well at USC with some actual quality guys to train with. Not sure if Maryland can even compete with the Bullis 4x4.
Despite their team championships at indoors and outdoors last year, USC's individual results weren't amazing. Felt like they barely got over the line and they should have won by significantly more. They had something like five guys run 9.9 at the start of outdoor, but only two of them made the NCAA final, one of whom finished last. All sorts of stuff like that. I just don't think USC is great individually, which is what Wilson needs obviously.
Quincy already posted an insta story about the #2 400m guy from nbn also likely to commit to Maryland. I think they have also signed two sub 1:50 guys in the 800 so far. UMD had a senior run 1:46 this spring and place at big10s, but from my understanding, Siebert was his coach.
Maybe the tides are turning?
The men still don’t have an indoor track team. I assume Quincy may like this because then he can do his own thing/run indoor USAs.
Anyone else think we've seen Quincy's peak already? Better hope this coach can clean up his awful form or his inconsistent results will continue. He'll go the way of Matthew Boling who could also never clean up his form. At least Quincy knows his event while Boling persisted with the 100 for far too long.

If all goes well, he could still leave college in 2028 for Olympic year. Good test case for college NIL vs formal pro contract in this new era.
One of my predictions last year was that he would go pro but stay at home with hs coach and attend UMD as a student, but nil really changes that option.
Seems like a strange choice. Any chance his high school coach comes as a package deal or something?
It would seem strange to someone like yourself who doesn't know much about the sport. The Maryland coach is Andrew Valmon, you may want to type his name into your search bar and hit return.
Not sure why Andrew Valmon would need a high school assistant coach. I think he'll do just fine. However, I've known how some hs coaches wont let go of their golden goose as well. Wouldn't wish that on Andrew or anyone else.
Andrew Valmon has been at Maryland for like, 20 years. Sure he has basically zero dollars to work with, but note:
Kameron Jones went from 1:49 800m at Maryland to 1:45 at Clemson
Caleb Dean went from 50.x 400mH at Maryland to NCAA Champ 47.x at Texas Tech, NCAA Champ 60mH 7.5, Big 12 Champ 60m 6.5 ......
Quincy will be fine but lets not pretend Valmon is a genius
Watch what he did on the first leg of the 4x400m WC final in Stuttgart 1993. The man knows.
Good luck wearing Under Armour sprint spikes. If he keeps his New Balance NIL deal, at least he'll have that when he's not running for the Terps.
what's the difference what brand of spikes he wears? track spikes are not exactly a marvel of technology.
Except that they are.
The advent of superspikes is a real thing - carbon fiber plate with significant later of high density foam that the likes of NB, Adidas and Nike offer.
The rest are sh*t.
That's why UnderArmour schools don't care what footwear you wear or else they wouldn't ever be able to sign anybody.
Absolutely The USA has not won A World Cross Country Individual Title since Craig Virgin in 1980 and 1981, Which was Before Quincy Wilson was Born, Quincy should Ditch the 400 (USA will have other Great 400 Runners in the Near Future) And Focus On Winning NCAA In Cross Country and Proving Americans can still Win Cross Country
When You look at Quincy Wilson and Craig Virgin They are very Similar Craig Virgin was Great in High School Running, Quincy Wilson is Great in High School Running, Craig Virgin was A Great Collegiate Runner, Quincy Wilson will be a Great Collegiate Runner, Craig Virgin had the American 10000 Record it is a Given Quincy Wilson will have the American 400 Record, Maybe They are Twins. Yeah Ditch The 400 to concentrate on Cross Country that Would be a Great call.

Huh? I guess he has bad grades? Why would you go to a weird school like that? Iffy Addy Wiley and choosing that non-NCAA sketchy "college" is the weirdest choice I've ever heard of!

Dude, the median SAT at Maryland is 1450. It’s a great school, academically.

This.
Rooting for the kid, but it's likely we've seen his peak.

No idea on the peaking part but working on that form with a proven 400 m coach might be of benefit.
