Cool that we'll get to watch Goucher v. Ritz for the next 3 years.
This is one of the saddest posts I have ever read here. Please let the kids be kids.
THIS is one of the saddest posts?! Dude, check out the DJT presidential thread. My post is simply stating that it's cool to have next generation runners doing well and enjoying the sport. Not sure what's sad about that.
Cool that we'll get to watch Goucher v. Ritz for the next 3 years. Seems like JR has put in a lot more training that CG, so perhaps the gap will be closer next year, once a full year of high school training takes hold.

Care to elaborate?
Sure. The Ritz kid ran a sub 4:30 at Brooks PR last year. If you can do that in 8th grade, you are clearly training pretty seriously, no matter who your parents are. I didn't see CG in those results or anything on the national level, indicating that he probably kept it pretty casual in middle school. A year of high school training can make a huge difference for an under-trained athlete. Ergo....

I don't really know, but I do remember on the Kara/Des podcast, Kara said middle school cross country was like 4 weeks, and I think he basically missed last year (8th grad) with illness.

If Ritz Jr has already been doing 60-80 mpw, then of course you’re correct, but I’m guessing maybe he’s doing half that amount, but smartly. But I take your point about Goucher Jr having a lot of upside relative to his purportedly limited training.
Both were the top frosh in 5a so will be fun to watch these guys progress. Ritz Jr’s time is close to what would’ve won it for the past five years. Crazy. Some kids are just talented… I’m guessing Ritz Jr could’ve run a sub-4:30 in 8th grade off of just 20-30 mpw because of his genetics.

Agree. It's great if Jude is into running and takes it seriously. But given what his father went through (intense training in high school, followed by years of injury struggles), I have to imagine that the elder Ritz is giving his son good guidance about not overdoing things. So perhaps Jude is training at a higher level than most high school freshman, but I have to imagine it's being done in a smart manner.

Exactly, MS sports are short seasons here (~4wks) because they want to spread them out so that they don't stack and kids can try multiple sports that are usually the same season in HS. The downside is that one injury or bad cold could take you out for the whole season. Although, they are likely in the running club that is much more competitive than school. Similarly, most schools won't even try soccer because so many kids play club
Hold up. A freshman running 1519 on a XC course at 5000 ft elevation? That’s pretty incredible. Even if his dad ran 1429 as a junior at sea level.
6000’ actually and not an easy course. For comparison’s sake, Parker Wolfe ran 15:10 in the super shoe era as a senior, though he won it and wasn’t gunning anyone down.

Not just elevation but a rough course as well with tough hills and water crossings. This isn't like other states that run on golf courses. This isn't a PR type course.
No, this isn’t about some 2000s race, it’s the order that Jude Ritz (6th as freshman), Rocco Culpepper (37th as Sr), and Colton Goucher (44th as freshman) finished in yesterday’s CO 5A state championship.

On her podcast, Kara has also been really transparent about how her and Adam are working with the coach to keep Colt's mileage low. I think he was running 10-15 mpw prior to this year? then said she wanted him to stay under 30 mpw this year but with the long runs and workouts, it basically wasn't possible for him to do that and run with the team so she had to give up a couple weeks in, but is going to be strict in off-season, summer, etc.

What is sad is that your life is ostensibly so empty that you are so looking forward to what kids do in their extracurricular activities, and they are not your kids. Please leave the kids alone.
