He served on a mission in the Philippines for two years, 2020-22.
Grundvig: The 6.3, giant, Computer Science major, 7:54/13:34/28:48, came back from the Philippines out of shape, as you can imagine, from working and living in a tropical country for two years and it's almost a miracle that he got back in great shape. By the way, he came back from that mission fluent in Tagalog, the national language of the Philippines.
The way I see it (with regard to age advantage ) is a false narrative because they gain two years in age, but at the same time, they "lose" two years by doing a mission overseas, where most of the BYU runners when they go overseas do very little or no running.
The way it works for people on a mission is that they have to do everything with their partner and if their partner is not a runner then that 30 minutes allocated to exercise in the morning goes out the window. Yes you read it right, that's all they have in a 24-hour period 30 minutes per day for exercise. After that it's 16 hours per day spreading the word. Honorable people Mormons - big respect.
Serious question but does this matter? The US collegiate system doesn't exactly produce a ton of winners at Olympics for the longer distances.
Wouldn't kids be better off spending this time to truly build a base like the east African's rather than learning to run fast to win meaningless races and save a coaches job?
I've never ever understood the US obsession with amateur kids sports
Sorry for the ignorant question, but what's the current quota of international athletes per college?
Seems like the state schools at least should be obliged to provide most sports scholarships to the kids of the taxpayers actually funding their schools. Kids in the US high school system who are training hard for those scholarships.
Of course the international kids are working even harder as there is not only an education at stake but also potentially a visa and a better life. Especially true in poorer countries. There will always be many more kids outside the US than inside, so if there are no limits on internationals, domestic athletes won't get their opportunity to develop.
I always find it interesting which schools sit people out of the conference meets each year. For instance, BYU sat their number one runner for conference (Hunter Kitchen).
In the end, it's a little hard to judge for nationals based on conference depending on who actually runs

Hunter Kitchen is not BYUs #1 runner, he’s a good runner and won a meet for them where they rested most of their varsity. But may not be in their top 7 this year. You might be confusing him for Tayvon Kitchen.

Being 6ft7inches is surely no advantage in distance running. Hey, they should do a division for super tall runners.
In my book, anything over 6.2 is too tall for distance running, for most. Not dissing - just saying...
Optimal height for distance runners, males - 5:6-5:10 - most monsters fall in that range, give or take an inch or two either side, aside from a few outliers like Yomif Kejelcha, 6.2. (high end), Haile G. at the low end (5.4/5.5).
Do you really think that 4 of the best teams in the nation, running full rosters, is less meaningful than some random high school state meet?
Do you really think any average sports fan is interested in seeing OSU's 7 Kenyans race against ISU's 7 Kenyans in the state of Missouri? They could have just raced back in Kenya.
This is killing our sport. And it's just the beginning because it's been less than 6 months since those teams got an extra 30 scholarships. They are going to put 27 of those 30 extra scholarships into Kenyans too.
A meet like this is far less meaningful as a consumer of XC than state HS championships, NXR meets or NXN.
I’m not so sure about that. There were lots of consumers taking advantage of hosting a high level xc meet. Especially with Rim Rock hosting the state meet the next day a lot of high schoolers as well as local running community came out to watch both meets. XC consumers can appreciate a product like the big 12 meet. For the dozens of xc consumers it was worth the free admission.

OSU only has three Kenyans on their roster.
It’s far easier to accept their favorite teams getting beat if they just make stuff up to support their argument. After all, they’ve been following these kids since they were 8 and are really invested in their running progression. Just not worth watching high quality competition if you can’t pronounce the names.
