Makes the Olympic final after a long college season and gets 12th still not in super-spikes (Hoka did not have one yet)
The next year trains like a pro and gets super spikes finally, gets 4th not running for a medal and nips Mo Ahmed who was running for bronze and faded to 5th.

Luis is a fellow Cali boy who I looked up to in HS as one of the few Latino's at a high level in the sport so I'm rooting for him.
I think if he had Dragonfly's he could have beaten Teare for the title.
I was a Cooper hater in high school and rooted for Luis. Luis always came across as a likeable guy. Cooper was immature in high school. He has matured quite a bit since then. I remember running Woodbridge where Grijalva and Teare went 1 and 2 and I finished over a minute back. They were both legends in CA high school running at the time.
Huge jump from nobody to 4th in the world? Then all of a sudden nobody again? Extremely suspicious. How has this never been discussed? Is everyone really dumb enough to buy his anti doping crap? If he ever comes back and starts running world class performances without world class times, I will just give up on this sport - it is already so dirty. going into Eugene, his pr was 13:10 from a fast diamond league (and his only at the time if I remember correctly). In Eugene, he ran only 4 seconds slower but closed in 2:24/55. Are we seriously expected to believe he was able to jump from a mediocre college time to 4th in the world (beating barega, cheptegei, kejalcha and Fischer and only a second off of Jakob) naturally. Get your facts right and pay attention to the sport you claim to love. We should all want it clean...
What we actually want is stupid, unfounded allegations off LetsRun (and everywhere), especially when they insult others and claim this superpower of being the chosen ones who know who dopes and who does not.

4:02/8:46 in HS isn’t too shabby and Armijo HS has no running tradition.
Luis was fortunate enough to be coached by Dave Monk during his relatively short stint at Armijo. Monk later left to coach Sac State and is currently coaching at Vacaville, which has quickly developed into one of the better programs in Northern California.
I had the opportunity to see Monk present at a clinic a few years after Luis graduated. Their training was well thought out and clearly well executed.

Ok, Mario won the 2022 indoor mile and Yared won the 2019 1500m lets be fair
I think Luis could have won the 2021 indoor 5k but he ran XC instead.

Cali dude here - I dunno if Luis would have been able to beat Teare at that time - but as another guy pointed out earlier, Luis didn’t come from a high school with a big-time structured program in place and yet he was state mile champ etc. He was always oozing potential, you could even see it in how light footed he was on the track. Hopefully he keeps developing.
