i see it different. not everyone develops up from youth ball to college and beyond. the higher level you get if favors freaks. high skill, speed, height (if not clumsy), jumping/aerial ability, exceptional understanding of how to play the game.
the 2 best juggle kings in youth soccer age 10 when we started select were JV bench warmers a half decade later. what used to be unique skill became universal competence. and they were so slow in a running game. you can't use some slow dude who can't keep up on defense or separate on offense. you had to be really really skilled to stand out age 18.
conversely, speed that scored me goals age 10 was better age 18 and burning even scholarship division teams for goals for my d3.
if you can ball, speed always scales up. and yeah if you are fast enough to be useful on a soccer field you could run at least d3.
it's a choice. i decided to not make a choice because soccer has coaching politics, which track balances. and soccer you only have to be one of 11, track you gotta be the best.
i think all but future pros or kids who just love one sport, should be trying to play more than one. it's good athletically and emotionally.
