Mike Smith spent years working on Nico's kick and still hasn't gotten him ready for a world championship race. I don't have faith in Mike Smith to take Nico any further.

Ritz and Ben Thomas are much better.
Like any coach would, Smith has worked on Young’s strength and given that Young has become America’s best 5/10 runner, he has done a good job. Young is not Mo Farah, so he’s not always going to have the best kick. He’s only 23, and as his strength increases he’ll kick to more wins. This year he did have a tremendous kick when set his 5000m AR.
You could also ask what the heck is wrong with Teare.
i feel like peoples expectations for teare are too high. He’s put up some nice times. I dont know what he ever did that people insist on holding him to a standard of making teams or being world stage competitive

Blanks is going to surpass Nico in 2026 and 2027. Blanks was a full time student this whole year and ran a full NCAA cross country season. He then had to go chase the 10k world standard early in the spring about 6 months before the World Championships. That makes it insanely hard to peak in September.
It was a big advantage for Nico's preparation to not have to worry about XC and to already have the world standard in the 10k.
Blanks also has barely any altitude training, while Nico has lived at altitude for 5 years. Blanks has a much higher upside.

I also predict Nico having a really hard time beating Ky Robinson (albeit an Australian) in the future. Ky is faster in the mile and faster in the 3000m.
With no World Championships in 2026, Robinson can break through as a contender for the 10,000m as well.
He beat Nico today in the 5000m and actually ran 27:47 WAY BACK in 2022, so he has shown great 10k potential.
Or having better training partners can push him to World Records?
Like Rupp and Mo Farah. Neither would have had their success without having the other as a training partner.
Teare is good but can't really push Hocker like that.
The best athletes rarely need to push more in training. If anything, they need to be reined in, lest they leave their best efforts in practice and show up overcooked on race day.

Started with a 3:50 indoor mile that was the fastest any college kid had ever run.

Nico has a big advantage over Robinson in 5000 PRs and 27:47 is really slow no matter when he ran it. They’ve both run 3:50 for the mile and Nico beat him by 10 seconds in one of the Boston indoor 5000m. Nico is only 23 so Robinson is chasing a moving target.

Ky is the same age as Nico and just beat Nico at the World Championships in the 5k.
I think Hocker and Ben Thomas work well together obviously.
I also don’t think Ben Thomas is the wonder coach above all coaches. Their pair works extremely well but I think Hocker would run fast with anyone.
Personally I think we need as many pro coaches and groups as possible. Iron sharpens iron. When Jerry was literally signing everyone both men and women, I think it kinda stalled out the US professionally

Let’s be grateful our top athletes have multiple choices and aren’t being coerced into one single doping/abusive situation.

Where is the doping/abusive situation? I don’t think that describes any distance coach in the U.S.
