John Walker. All class. He ran a complete disaster of a race at an indoor meet in my hometown while dealing with compartment syndrome. Came to the banquet afterwards and chatted engagingly with me and my best friend, us both seventeen, for a good ten or fifteen minutes.
Who’s that one chick that worked as a barista and got bronze in the Olympic marathon?
Molly Seidel, though I dunno how long she was actually doing that barista thing for. I have a feeling it was a super short term or part time thing that just made for a good soundbyte

Thanks, she seems cool as fk. Even if it was super short term, I still think it was admirable.
Spring of 1976, Jeff Galloway was my roomie in my NAU dorm while he was trying to get in shape for the US marathon trials. We stole food for him from the NAU food service and he had a $2.17/hr job working at Taco Bell. At one point he had bronchitis and could barely run. It was hard to see a former Olympian struggle like that. I'm sure Jeff doesn't look at his Flagstaff experience fondly but he went on to great success and I'll always think of him as a good guy.

what a great guy. humble and generous in person. everything good about our sport. anyone young or upcoming in track that ever met him will say the same.
Wasn’t Craig Engles’ core and entire competency all about being likable?
I think that’s his “schtick” as he becomes an Instagram influencer full time now. He’s doing that whole “aw shucks golly gee I’m just a dirtbag runner living in my van down by the river look at me I’m so crazyyyyyyy guys my videos show how many times I pooped on my run heyyyy I’m a bro I’m so unique”. That’s his entire sell on social media. To who? I don’t know. Just start the only fans already dear lord.

Took my future ex-wife to the Rosemont Horizon in January 1985 to see the "Vitalis Mile" featuring Eamonn Coghlan, Steve Scott, and John Walker. Brought my 1975 Track & Field News with Walker on the cover gutting out his 3:49.4 WR mile in hopes of getting him to autograph it. That'd be a cool thing to have, you know? The stands in the Horizon were way above the track and it looked like I'd never get close enough to him to ask. After the meet was over, my ex grabbed my T&FN and told me not to worry, she'd get Walker's autograph. Outside, as he exited the Horizon, Walker blew off a bunch of high school kids who wanted his autograph with a wave of his hand as he walked toward his airport limo. He then saw my wife, a pretty hot blonde number in 1985, stopped, signed the T&FN, gave her a hug, looked her up and down, and asked if she had anything else she'd like to have autographed. What a great guy!
My first big meet and i met ovett. he was wearing a pink mickey mouse hoodie in the warm up area. great guy. also for the Aussies out there Andrew Lloyd.
