He's 39!!!!!!!! 19th in the nation at a 4:50 per mile pace for 20K. Respect! Most of ya'll bustahs bashing Galen can't run 1 mile in 4:50...on da stremph!
Yeah but something isn’t right about this result. There’s no way he should be struggling to run 4:50 pace for 12 miles.
he’s older but damn chelanga beat him by 2 minutes and he’s older than rupp a few years ago rupp was way ahead of chelanga. Age doesn’t hit you this hard, this to me seems like rupp wasn’t clean

from the gun he was off the lead pack and at half way did not look comfortable. There was a point I thought he had dropped out

Kind of frustrating that I had to dig to the 2nd page to find this thread/it's not up on the home page. This is a really strong run from Mantz. Houston was windy but that course is pancake flat & temps were cool. Weather for New Haven was a lot better than past years but still not perfect. New Haven has plenty of rollers thrown in, including a decent incline right @ mile 10. Impressive that he was faster here. He could run sub-2:04 if he gets a decent dew point in Chicago.

What wasn't perfect about it? 63 degrees?

Yes, 63 at the start & warmer by the finish isn't perfect compared to 40s w./ a lower dew point. What's the point of this? I didn't say it was bad but I made a pretty easy comparison to Houston & gave an opinion that I think this result in warmer weather on a slower course is stronger. The dude is ready to throw down in Chicago if he catches a (close to) perfect weather day. That's kind of how marathoning goes. Weather is a big limiter. Nothing controversial here.
Slightly off topic, but I heard there is a style of pizza called New Haven-style. Has anyone had it after a run? what are its characteristics?
Thin crackly yet chewy crust, even getting it a bit charred is popular bc people like the coal fired brick oven taste. Not heavy on the cheese, clams are a popular topping
