Not to take anything away from the Lattas (huge fan, nice kids), but Tully arbitrarily lowered the adjustment here. He's used -87 for this race last year for both and this year for the guys, then switched to -81 for the girls' race this year. Each of the speed ratings should be 3 lower in that race. Unless there was some adjustment to the course between races, I just don't get it.
It is common that speed rating adjustments are not the same for boy's races and the girl's races at the same meet ... occasionally the adjustments are the same, but often the boy's adjustment is 3 to 6 seconds more than girls (sometimes more) ... The boys and girls races are always speed rated separately.
Speed ratings are not intended to measure how fast runners compare to a course ... Speed ratings measure how fast runners race relative to other runners, and not relative to a course.
If everybody at the SA Patriot Invite ran 30 seconds faster than they did, the speed ratings would stay exactly the same as the numbers posted because relative to each other runner, nothing changed.
Adjustments can vary due different overall quality in boys versus girls at the same meet ... or tactical races vs. all-out races or other reasons.
Beyer only makes adjustments when there's been a change in conditions at the track during the day. For the same track and same conditions, nothing should change. That is all I was pointing out. He also makes projections then sees how the races go to get what the daily or intradaily adjustments might be.
As for this past week's results, it looks like Noah Strohman is running well.

Bill Meylan and Tully runners doesn't seem to think it was very impressive. I guess a 30 sec course record only merits 186s. Doesn't make any sense to me, course was 3.2, meaning top 2 guys went under 14:30
How is the A&M course, my kid is running Nike South next weekend.
I'd say it is deceptively challenging.
If you stay on the start and finish area, it looks totally flat. The start to the first turn is about 0.6 miles or so and then the final straightaway stretch is 0.5 miles. Once they go off of these areas, there are gradual turns with gradual ups and downs.
Of local courses, I'd say it is similar to difficulty to state. Probably harder than Chile Pepper but not as hard as OSU. It is definitely a little long and you'll see why on Saturday. Look for the 5k column of the 8k course in relation to the finish line.
Also, prepare for everything to take forever - parking, toilets, finding a place to watch, etc.
