A bit of a non sequitur, but this reminds me of a local XC team, 3 or 4 days before a Semi-State race did a 12 x 1k repeat session at race pace. They were trying to "work through" the race to peak the following week for States. They were ranked liked top 3 going into the race, completely crashed out and finished close to last.
Needless to say, their stud freshman jumped ship, and transferred into my school. (He went on to several All State/State Runner-Up finishes and a NCAA National Championship in college.)
