I have run in many major US and international cities. The worst by far was a fairly recent jaunt in Alexander, Egypt. The worst shi*hole I have ever seen, probably because I was right in the heart of the ghetto. All eyes were on me, maybe because they couldn’t believe what I was doing in their city!
I second that…
Our hotel, outside of town in a safe zone protected by the army, was raked with AK fire during the night. It was two peasants arguing over something, one decided to fire a single shot in the air, due to lack of weapon maintenance, he bump-fired a whole magazine stitching the wall above the receptionist…
it was not dangerous, as the buildings were designed with concrete wall overlaps but the army dudes were still fuming in the morning…
Or where did your worst location-specific running experience happen?
Los Angeles. Concrete and pollution. Very little access to open space or even sidewalks once you are away from the coast. San Antonio was bad as well. Many of the same non-pedestrian friendly attributes plus miserable heat. Cities in general suck. Denver and the burbs were pretty nice.
Houston and Dallas are tied for the worst in my experience. The south in general sucks for running, but those two concrete jungles are among the worst places I've been.
Kigali is a beautiful city...very safe, pretty, and solid infrastructure.
My worst run was, of all places, Washington DC, just outside of the Mall. So many sketched out people around, bad roads. The Mall itself was nice though and it was epic to run to the Lincoln Memorial. .
Keep in mind that when I was in Nairobi & Blantyre Malawi I didn't bother run...just too unsafe (at the time) for a foreigner.
Albuquerque, New Mexico and also Decatur or any other small town near Dallas. You know, the hick towns where they haven't ever seen a runner before and yell something like, "run Forrest, run." Clown did that to me so I stopped running, confronted him. They always expect you to keep running, so its really a weak microaggression on their part. I'm different. He literally had a stick of grass in his mouth. He took a swing at me, missed. I took him to the ground and he started squealing for mercy. Probably the last time he ever said "Run Forrest, run."

What's wrong with Albuquerque? Make a wrong left turn?

I like it besides running. Sandia hotel/casino is good. I think they have a couple other casinos close by too. I just had to run off a hangover amd got heckled, attacked in an otherwise desolate wasteland.

Yes! No idea what the infatuation with moving to Texas is about. It's like the worst parts of Atlanta, but for 1000 square miles.

But I'd disagree about the South in general. N/asheville, Chattanooga, and others are tits (in general, and for running).
Vegas is awful, particularly the couple of miles directly surrounding the strip.
Heard similar about Egypt.
Vegas is okay as long as you run early. Have to hurdle a couple passed out homeless people and weave around those making the walk of shame, but the strip is kind of a fun place to run.
