Judy Jelagat Kemboi tested positive for Hydrochlorothiazide; she is now provisionally suspended, according to the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) on Wednesday.
The 26-year-old’s claim to fame happened at the 2024 Copenhagen Half Marathon, where she clocked her personal best of 1:05:43. A week later, on September 22nd, she ran the Brasov 10K in 30:29.
1) There's a reason why you cheat with this drug and here is another example.
2) Both are innocent and there is some explanation as to why people in Kenya are now suddently are testing positive for it
Does anyone know a) how many positives there have been for this drug in the last few years?
b) how much of the drugt was in Kemboi's system versus Chepngetich?
Hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ) isn't some mystery substance it's a textbook masking agent It's not used to get faster it's used to hide the drugs that make you faster. Athletes don’t “accidentally” end up with HCTZ in their system. It’s not something you randomly ingest unless you’re actively taking a banned diuretic for a very specific and shady reason. This isn’t a contaminated supplement case. This is someone taking a known diuretic used to flush PEDs.
This isn’t “both sides” journalism, it’s willful ignorance. You’re trying to sound fair and nuanced, but all you’re doing is defending an obvious cheat with “just asking questions” energy.
If you want a real world example of how this drug is used, look no further than Lance Armstrong’s era diuretics like HCTZ were staples in the masking regimens. Same script, new actors.
But HCTZ is easily detected for 10 days or more. Since it's banned and detectable, why use it? You're betting on a window of nearly 2 weeks where you aren't going to be tested. Unless it flushes out another drug with a much longer detection time
Never heard of her...who is she.I reckon even ordinary Kenyans don't know who she is.But obviously you guys on here get overly excited to drive a narrative. Drive it all you can but you are wasting your time because we can all see the motivation behind it.Actually,it was clever of you leaving it to @coevett to drive it.Atleast ,you appeared innocent. Anyway just do it,now that you have decided to openly do it.
However, I think this increases the odds that there is a drug cocktail in play, and when they put it together they blew it on the half-life of one of the drugs. The whole things is organized and administered. The athletes are not acting alone. They are not figuring out which drug and when and how much.
Given that the failed test is for a diuretic, is it likely that its function in the cocktail is to flush out the actual performance enhancers? Genuine question.
Edit: oops redundant post, should have read the next couple responses in the thread.

worth re-mentioning.
someone in the know should chime in, as i'm dated
that said
what people are doing, which worked prior, is to flush out the system after a cycle, or especially when drug testing is coming down, and advanced warning of a test, is something to look into.
basically, if testing is in the hands of locals, or the locals know wada is coming to town (through travel itinerary), the athletes chugs the "masking" agents 24/7.
i'd look into that loophole. again people in the know, will know.

what i'm strongly insinuating, is that only a fraction of the kenyans on PEDs have been caught.
WADA reports that 80% of the Africans making the podium in high profile races are untested.
so, after the half marathoner that ran in 56, the moron lady running the 4 min mile, the 209 bearded lady who ran 209, the upcoming 134x lady 5k , the upcoming 284x 10k lady, and sorry, the next 2 hr marathon guy.
KENYA WILL BE BANNED and Ethopia / Botswana / S Africa who are doing the same, would be warned...
i leave out WANYONYI, as a natural, but the facts fly in my face on that.
of course, the western countries are on top of letal peds and hacks now....
so we are talking about hard drugs versus soft drugs.
What is Kenya up to now on bans? 400 and what? When is this cesspool getting banned? They have no respect for the sport and have stolen from clean athletes relentlessly. Give them a ten year ban to learn some manners.
Yeah unfortunately we are there.
Yep we get it - it's not state sponsored like Russia, it's not institutionalized with respect to the state (only it is within the culture of Kenyan athletes), "innocent athletes will suffer", yep too f--ing bad - enough with the limp-wristed apathy.
You give whoever is clean over there "AIN" status as Individual neutrals, but Kenyan is done. And I tell you what, I wouldn't mind betting that all these scumbag European agents deeply involved in this all of a sudden didn't find it safe to go there anyone or the ramshackle clinics/doctors that are supplying athletes dried up pretty quickly.
It's just an absolute gong show right now, how much is enough?

i go further.
i am insinuating that the state in question, while not running a program, elements of government are involved, as in bribery, manipulation, and outright covert cheating.

So to be honest, this is where I am at too. It's framed up as "oh we have no idea, we are just as disgusted as everyone else, we are doing our best" but I'd love to know (just an example) where all of Sebs 5 million dollars into Kenyan anti-doping really is going because it doesn't seem to be working.
The problem is, the chances of anyone internally there coming forwards and shedding any true light on what's happening is basically zero - nobody wants to "disappear" or end up "in a car accident". But I, like you, have no doubts it's a web of all those things you mentioned just sold under this total BS "victim" narrative.

Judy Jelagat Kemboi did not have race results prior to 2023, so what times was she running 2020 to 2022? She would have been 20 to 23 then.
In 2023 she was consistently running 1:07 half 'thons. A lot of them.
"Two companies, Merck & Co. and Ciba Specialty Chemicals, state they discovered the medication which became commercially available in 1959.[6] It is on the World Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines.[7] It is available as a generic drug[3] and is relatively affordable.[8] In 2022, it was the twelfth most commonly prescribed medication in the United States, with more than 38 million prescriptions.[9][10]"
