That would be crazy but generally a guy with a 1:46-48 pb is never really a threat because his energy systems are built totally differently. I agree he should do cross country but just for fun. I emphasized the fun aspect in the past and caught some down votes. The point of running xc is to lighten the mood of running and avoiding burnout. Having a fun season in the fall. I'm not at all convinced he will ever be a great 5k runner. I know people have w*t dreams about runners being able to do it all, but as I've said before lutkenhaus is very clearly an 800m talent and this is when he ran a 1:47. Now I'm fully convinced as a senior he will specialize in the 800 and has a real shot at becoming a reigning world record holder and possibly a very respectable miler.
I remember when Hobbs Kessler ran unattached in a Michigan XC scrimmage earlier this year. Imagine being a college freshman in your first meet during your first few weeks on campus, you look over, and the Olympic 5th-palcer is standing next to you.
I agree with those saying you have to be very careful and focus on preserving him at this point. Putting him in a stasis chamber might be the safest bet for now.
Original post was a bit of a joke but his 15:58 pr in the 5k is fine for like 1:46 but most of these guys at 1:42 are much faster. Even his mile is is 10+ seconds slow for a 1:42 guy. Considering his 400 progression he seems like a guy with huge natural speed. He’s definitely not going to do double threshold and 80 mile weeks but some more aerobic focused work and a few races at like 90% effort is likely
He also hasn't raced a mile or anything other than 800 against the highest level of competition.
Not the highest level of competition but it should be known he has run a 4:06 mile against Caden Leonard who ran 4:04.
I’d like to think that after coming home from worlds (and hopefully 3 more 800s), Cooper would have enough in the tank to help out his high school XC team….even if that means running 5ks as tempos. No need to peak, increase mileage, or go all out. He could even “pace” the team’s #2 or something and help bring the whole pack up.
It’s not like he’s coming home from worlds and will be put out to pasture.

I'm sure that he could run some xc races this fall but both he and his high school coach have said he won't be doing that.
After Worlds he should take a break from running and then start gradually building up for next track season.
