If you think it’s going to be hard to make the team this year, imagine how hard it will be at the Olympic trials when half or more of the today’s milers move up the 5000.
Agreed, the 1500m is insane. People will need to give the 5000m a go

Fisher, Young and Blanks are the best 1-3 group in any distance event in U.S. history. Today’s milers are better off staying put.

I don't believe there is inferior talent in the 5000.
Teare could have a decent chance in a slower race but he might choke again like last year's trials. To be honest, his best run at the national champs/oly trials in my opinion was at the 2020(21) trials 5k when he got 4th behind Chelimo, Kincaid, and Fisher. I don't think his win in 2022 was very good because the field was really weak then - just look at Holt who got 4th there who hasn't done so well afterwards.
Ok I think the safe pick is the same as the 10k team, but I will note that I haven’t seen anyone say that maybe Hocker said it was the easiest race of the season while finishing 3rd bc he felt great but was saving his legs for the 5k. He’s got 7:23 3k strength, so if it starts out slow (the 10k was crawling), he may be a factor. Idk in a 13:15 race he might crush
ngl i thought this was a long shot when i said it but holy crap he led almost the whole 5k, got gapped, and still had a huge kick ftw
If only Drew had their recources hes just as talented
What do you mean by “resources”. The big three get to stay at a nicer hotel and dine at 5 star restaurants?
At the prep level I would still say Drew was better than Grant and Nico looking at 800-XC accolades, records and times. Grant went to Stanford a school with a history of distance running excellence, then to Bowerman with almost ALL of the current best 5k guys in the US at the time. Imagine if drew trains with people like Lopez Lomong, Woody Kincaid, Evan J, etc. He's taken all of that experience and went back to hist first coach and scaled everything up as a pro runner now. Those medals were earned over years of going through all of that^
Nico went to NAU where the team is so dominant at xc and distance events for so many years. His college coach was training freaking Galen Rupp and they were all living at altitude.
No offense to Drew he is one of my favorite runners to follow of all time. I don't care if he win everything I just know he has a ton of potential. Him getting 4th almost beating Nico is super impressive considering many may have written him off for years. He's placed 4th at the us champs now twice despite being much older from when he qualified for his 1st world champs. Remember Nico is the american record holder over 5k and his first grand slam and diamond league 5k setting an american record this year and drew almost beat him. Looking at his form at the end of these races to me shows he has the capability just might need to change up the training partners to people of that caliber.
No offense to Tinman Elite because I think there should be more national level teams for people who want to continue competing but Grant and Nico have almost always had connections to WORLD class coaches and training partners thats the biggest difference between them. Imagine if Drew went through the Jerry gauntlet and got to train with those guys for a few years.
I know I'm a softie but I just feel bad for Drew Hunter. Getting 4th narrowly at the 5k this year and 10k last year (both times to Nico Young) has got to suck.

Josette, Taylor, and I’ll say Katelyn Tuohy because I want to see this message board explode
Hilarious that you thought she had any chance. She is washed up.
It was fun to pick her for the memes. Nailed the top 3 for the men's side, but I underestimated Cranny (though I picked her in the prediction contest) and never considered Shelby after her disastrous outdoor season. She's having a strange up-and-down since returning.

First off, yes, Drew is a talented runner, and we all know his story. However, I don't feel a bit sorry for him. You're post "If only Drew had their resources, he's just as talented", is misguided and wrong! He didn't "almost beat Nico", or "almost make the team". He missed making the team by 5000m! and no time qualifier. You make it sound like Drew never had the support and was never given the opportunity to be successful, and that Grant, Cole, and Nico somehow won the lottery and were selected by USATF to be part of an elite training group. Drew in FACT was the one who was a "leg up" and had the advantage over all three. He was a high school phenom, got a full gig to Oregon (of which he turned down), and got a HUGE long term shoe deal with Adidas. Holy Sh*t!!! what am I missing? This dude had the proverbial "Silver spoon" up his A$$. You can't ask for anything more as a young elite runner coming out of high school at 18-19 years old. WTF HAPPENED? I know what happened, his parents (Mom), his wacky a$$ coach Tinman got in his head and thought they would turn the track world upside down and create their own track club (Tinman Elite), create their own workouts, convince Adidas to fund them, flip the middle finger to all the other clubs while posting lame workout videos as to how great they were. Then reality hit, and hit HARD!. Tinman retires or is fired, Mom takes over coaching using her vast high school experience, Drew jumps on the injury train, training partners become disillusioned and start to bailout, and KABOOM!!! It all goes up in smoke. In the meanwhile, those other elite "more fortunate guys" like Galen Rupp, Grant F, Cole Hocker, and Nico, etc... all go to college with established programs with legitimate coaches, and develop both mentally and physically. No wasted years of making lame workout videos and trying to become social media track stars. Even with all that happening, Drew still had a chance to join an elite club, with an elite coach, with elite training partners that would've kicked his A$$ and pushed him to his potential, but NO. He decides to go the safe route, do it his way and only manages to scape out a few quality times and a couple of heart breaking 4th place Team USA qualifying finishes....OUCH!
Ain't NO TEARS here. The guy we should have sympathy for is Cooper Teare. The dude did all he could do, and couldn't close the deal. Now that stings!!!

I hear you. I'm mostly just talking about being a fan of his running the business stuff I was not a fan of. I don't even feel sorry for him either. But you live and you learn
I'm not picking Blanks. I think it'll be Wolfe, but I think Gilman/Hunter might actually be right there. Expecting Grant to bounce back weirdly, and then Blanks to get passed late by one of the dark horses.
