Front running 3:28-low with bad pacing after rounds is such an underrated performance. He may have choked by not defending his title and missing the podium, but physically that’s probably the most impressive 1500 he’s ever run. I think El G is the only other person in history who could’ve done that, and even he would’ve had to bring his A game.
A good way to put it in perspective is to ask yourself how high Wightman, Kerr, or Hocker would have placed had they swapped places with Jakob in the finals they won. Does anyone really think Hocker is running 3:28 if he has to open in 54 and take the field through 1200 in 2:47? What ifs don’t mean anything in this sport and ultimately Jakob’s championship losses are always going to be a stain on his record, but it’s obvious he’s an extremely special athlete. Even the fact he’s consistently the top ranked 1500m runner in the world while dominating the 5k is unprecedented in the modern era.
Agreed. This is the most competitive the 1500m has ever been. Even El Guerrouj would have a hard time.
